LEARNING DAILY

I was visiting family in Iowa recently and my nephew gave me this article written by Paul Harvey; it was printed in 1965. It certainly reads like a game plan that has been implemented very efficiently by the devil. I will let you read it and make a comment or two at the end.

If I were the devil … If I were the Prince of Darkness, I’d want to engulf the whole world in darkness. And I’d have a third of its real estate, and four-fifths of its population, but I wouldn’t be happy until I had seized the ripest apple on the tree — Thee.  So I’d set about however necessary to take over the United States. I’d subvert the churches first — I’d begin with a campaign of whispers. With the wisdom of a serpent, I would whisper to you as I whispered to Eve: ‘Do as you please.’

“To the young, I would whisper that ‘The Bible is a myth.’ I would convince them that man created God instead of the other way around. I would confide that what’s bad is good, and what’s good is ‘square.’ And the old, I would teach to pray, after me, ‘Our Father, which art in Washington…’

“And then I’d get organized. I’d educate authors in how to make lurid literature exciting, so that anything else would appear dull and uninteresting. I’d threaten TV with dirtier movies and vice versa. I’d pedal narcotics to whom I could. I’d sell alcohol to ladies and gentlemen of distinction. I’d tranquilize the rest with pills.

“If I were the devil I’d soon have families that war with themselves, churches at war with themselves, and nations at war with themselves; until each in its turn was consumed. And with promises of higher ratings I’d have mesmerizing media fanning the flames. If I were the devil I would encourage schools to refine young intellects, but neglect to discipline emotions — just let those run wild, until before you knew it, you’d have to have drug sniffing dogs and metal detectors at every schoolhouse door.

“Within a decade I’d have prisons overflowing, I’d have judges promoting pornography — soon I could evict God from the courthouse, then from the schoolhouse, and then from the houses of Congress. And in His own churches I would substitute psychology for religion, and deify science. I would lure priests and pastors into misusing boys and girls, and church money. If I were the devil I’d make the symbols of Easter an egg and the symbol of Christmas a bottle.

“If I were the devil I’d take from those who have, and give to those who want until I had killed the incentive of the ambitious.

And what do you bet I could get whole states to promote gambling as the way to get rich? I would caution against extremes and hard work in Patriotism, in moral conduct. I would convince the young that marriage is old-fashioned, that swinging is more fun, that what you see on the TV is the way to be. And thus, I could undress you in public, and I could lure you into bed with diseases for which there is no cure. In other words, if I were the devil I’d just keep right on doing what he’s doing.

There are many tricks the devil has done over the years to deceive, to disrupt and to discourage people. The situation this country finds itself in has not been sudden in its change. It has been 59 years since Paul Harvey penned these thoughts and the devil has used every one of them. I wonder how much longer God will allow this to go on! “You better stay ready, so you don’t have to get ready!” (Pastor Ed Newton).

LEARNING DAILY

Psalm 71:5, “For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O Lord, from my youth.”

1 Peter 1:3, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to His great mercy, He has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”

Hebrews 11:1, “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

Hope was the subject of the message given this weekend by Pastor Ed Newton. That is why there are three verses with the word hope blackened for emphasis. Hope has been written about in this blog before. But I was not as efficient as Pastor Newton was.

Hope is used too many times when we “wish” something to occur. It is used too often as a response, “I hope so”. But the word hope when used in Scripture is different. The Hebrew word for hope is “tikvah” which means woven together as in a cord or a rope to hold on to; it is the confident expectation that your situation can change. Go back and read the definition Pastor gave and notice the words confident expectation. Do you see how that is different from wishing it will happen?

Pastor gave detail for this confidence. Because Jesus Christ rose from the grave, we can have hope because He is alive! It is one thing to hope (wish) we are saved, that we have eternal life after death; it is another thing to have a confident expectation of our salvation because Jesus Christ rose from the dead as He said He would. The reason for the Believer’s hope is that Jesus Christ is alive. He ascended to the right hand of God the Father and is preparing a place for every Believer as they walk the narrow way into His kingdom. Because He is alive, every person who believes Him will be saved, changed and be resurrected.

I don’t believe people can survive without hope. Sure, people can exist, but hope keeps each of us moving forward through painful experiences and fear of what lies ahead. We live in a world where famine, warfare, poverty, disease, terrorism and fear of virus-linked outbreaks are always before us; we need a “living hope”! Ephesians 2:12 tells us that those without Jesus Christ have no hope. I would not want to wake up each day without the hope there is in Jesus. By the power of God’s word and the Holy Spirit living within us our thoughts, words, and actions are changed so we hang on to the “living hope” instead of fearing today or what tomorrow might bring.

Hope (Tikvah) in Jesus Christ is what I hold on to each day. I am able to do so because “Hope is a promise” (Pastor Newton). “Because He lives, He keeps His promise!” Jesus is our present hope and our future hope (from the Listener Guide). His promise to His faithful followers is to be with them through every circumstance they face as they walk on the narrow way (Jeremiah 29:11) and that all things work together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). Those are thoughts and promises we can grasp and hang onto as we go through our daily lives and face trials and circumstances. It makes me want to tie that rope (hope) around my waste and hang on to it with both hands as tightly as I can. It is an anchor for me that is certainly tight and secure!

LEARNING DAILY

Matthew 12:41, “The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here.”  Jesus

I find the need for a sign in order for one to believe in Jesus to be interesting. Jesus declared in the passage the verse above was taken from that this generation, His generation, was evil and spiritually unfaithful to God. If Jesus was walking on earth today, what would He say about this generation of people? They demanded a sign from Jesus to show He was who said He was; the miracles He had already done and that had been witnessed by them was enough to confirm His divine authority, to validate He was the Messiah; but they did not believe. Jesus told them the only sign they would get was the “the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was in three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”

Jesus was comparing the Pharisees with the people of Nineveh. The people of Nineveh repented of their evil ways after hearing Jonah’s message. The Pharisees, however, continued in their unbelief after seeing Jesus perform miracles.  Jesus told the Pharisees they were responsible for their unbelief after all they had seen and heard from Him. The people of Nineveh had received far less teaching and had less evidence but still believed God and changed their ways. He told them by way of a prophetic statement that the only sign they would get was He would be in the earth three days and three nights just like Jonah in the belly of the great fish.

Back up to verse 36 in this passage and you find another reference to judgment. This judgment is referred to as coming when Jesus returns as King to set up His kingdom on earth; it is also referred to as the second coming. Two judgments occur. One is for those who have not placed their faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. Those who reject Him as their Savior and Lord will be judged on their own righteousness which will come short of God’s standard. Their names will not be written in the Lamb’s Book of Life; this is known as the Great White Throne Judgment (Revelation 20:11-15). This time will clearly show how each person’s sinful life (their rejection of Him) has deservedly separated them from God.

The second judgment will be for those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. 2 Corinthians 5:10 describes the Judgment Seat of Christ where Believers stand before Him, where He will examine their words and deeds in order to determine their rewards in eternity with Him. Let me emphasize that their salvation is not determined here because their names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life the moment their faith is placed in the Lord Jesus.

It is on this day of the Great White Throne Judgment that Jesus says the people of Nineveh, even as wicked as they were, will criticize and condemn the people of His generation. The people of Ninevah repented when they heard of God’s judgment coming. The people of His generation did not.

The sign of Jonah has been fulfilled. It has happened. The judgment Jesus spoke about is still to come and it comes down to personal choice by each person living right now. The choices we face comes down to a truly repentant heart, believing God or not. The choice is to walk a narrow way that leads to eternal life in God’s kingdom or walk a broad way that leads to destruction. We have the choice to follow the people of Nineveh or to follow the Pharisees and the Jewish people of Jesus’ generation. The people of Nineveh will also respond to the people rejecting Jesus as Savior and Lord.

In my opinion, there is no real choice to be made here. “And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord choose this day whom you will serve, …. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (the beginning and end of Joshua 24:15).

LEARNING DAILY

Jonah 3:5, So the people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them.

The response from the people – “the greatest to the least of them” – was to believe God’s warning. Putting on sackcloth was a visual sign they acknowledged their sinful ways and their “repentance”. The term is not written in this account. Repentance is the action that comes when one has sincere regret, remorse or sorrow for their actions. These people believed the words of God’s judgment, took them seriously and revival took place. These people did not seem to be just concerned about judgment, they believed God.

Did Jonah preach more than just judgment? Was putting on sackcloth and fasting saying that the people believed in God? God did relent because the people turned from their evil ways. This certainly shows that God does not want any person to perish; He wants them to turn from their sinful lives, turn to Him for their salvation through Jesus Christ and be changed by Him.

Here comes the questions. Did Jonah preach more to the people? These people did not need to be told about their evil, sinful way of life. They already knew it. The people living in our day do not really need to have clarification about what God considers to be sin. What the people of Nineveh needed was motivation to change, to repent. That still holds true for the people around us.

I find this account of Jonah and the Ninevites very interesting. No doubt Jonah had God’s protection because He sent him with the message of 40 days and Ninevah would be overthrown. There is no reason given for this quick, sincere, and what appears to be an almost total national turnaround in the Assyrian nation. Did witnesses of the great fish vomiting Jonah up on the shore get to Nineveh before him? Did the appearance of Jonah caused by being in the belly of the fish (the juices, etc., you know) give him some sort of spiritual appearance? Had God, Himself, prepared the people for Jonah’s message? Or did an eclipse around this time have some sort of spiritual message ahead of Jonah?

I have a keen sense for the obvious! There is a need for such a revival in our nation today! The question might be asked about how badly the people of this nation want to see revival happen. The research, I have seen at times, would indicate that desire to be very low. Luke 17:26-30 tell us the last days will be like the days of Noah, living life without a care in the world, not understanding their way of life is evil and sinful, without God. Revival begins with “believing God” and changing from our evil ways. It must begin with the true Church and allowing the changes affect those around us.

About the eclipse that passed over this nation on April 8. There are those who have related this eclipse with an eclipse that passed over northern Iraq on June 17, 776 BC. This would fit the time frame that Jonah was sent to Nineveh. In doing some research about this, I found a writing by Donald Wiseman that stated a solar eclipse would mean to the Assyrians, “the king will be deposed and killed, a worthless fellow will seize the throne…rain from heaven will flood the land…the city walls will be destroyed.” He goes on to write that at such a time there would be solemn fasting. Could that help explain the incredible response of the Assyrian people to Jonah’s message?

As interesting as I have found this to be, there are those who have related the eclipse of April 8 to Jonah’s message of “Yet forty days and Ninevah will be overthrown!” Does it apply to the United States of America? I sure do not know. I do know there is a need for this nation of ours to repent of our ways, to believe God. Most will dismiss this eclipse as a warning of judgment coming. Few are going to change from their wicked ways because they just do not want to. Few care that their actions are sinful. Yes, we are a stiff-necked people (Acts 7:51) who have knowledge of our sinful lives and lack any motivation to change.

Judgment is coming! It might be in forty days. It might be in another time. But it is coming for those who do not believe God and do not change their ways!

LEARNING DAILY

Jonah 3:3-4, So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a three-day journey in extent. And Jonah began to enter the city on the first day’s walk. Then he cried out and said, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”

Jonah finds himself spit up onto dry land. I can imagine his elation at that. But God, came to him a second time and told him to go preach the message of repentance. I would think the experience he had just been through caused him to be obedient even if he was reluctant.

Because I do not always read as carefully as I should, I missed some details of Jonah’s walk to Nineveh and that is why I continue to tell you that you need to study God’s Word as you read it in order to better understand it. In the number of times I have read this book, I missed the detail that Jonah “began to enter the city on the first day’s walk”. All I had read was “Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a three-day journey”. When I carefully read the passage, I became confused by these conflicting points. In some research I found that the city was so large it would take three days to walk around it (in extent).

One question I have that is not addressed in the Bible is where the dry land was. From what I have read and seen on maps, Nineveh is a great distance (500 miles +) from the coast of Phoenicia. How did Jonah enter the city on the first day of his journey? Here is where we take God at His Word, believing if we needed to know He would have explained it.

Understanding what happened as Jonah entered the city with the message God had sent him with and knowing the people’s beliefs and worship of the fish god (remember the last page of the blog) he was sent to give us a clue to what happened as spoke in God’s message. Again, we are not told if there were witnesses to the great fish vomiting Jonah on to the shore. My study indicates that there were probably witnesses who told others what they had seen and probably became followers of Jonah.

Read what I found on a website called Got Questions. Your Question. Biblical answers. Some scholars have speculated that Jonah’s appearance, bleached white from the action of the fish’s digestive acids, would have been of great help to his cause. It could be that the Ninevites would have been greeted by a man whose skin, hair, and clothes were bleached ghostly white—a man accompanied by a crowd of frenetic followers, many who had witnessed him being vomited upon the shore by a great fish. Given the piscine nature of Jonah’s arrival, Nineveh’s repentance follows from a logical progression.

Jonah arrives in the city with a short but direct message, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” The number 40 is used in Scripture for times of testing. Jonah’s “prophetic warning to the Ninevites was conditional and designed to motivate repentance” (David Jeremiah Study Bible). This was not a message of hope nor a promise of forgiveness. It was a message that judgment was coming. If the people did not repent, they would be overthrown. Again, we are not told if this was the entire message Jonah spoke; it certainly was the center or the emphasis of what he spoke to the people of Nineveh.

How did the people of Nineveh respond? That is the subject of the next page of the blog.

LEARNING DAILY

Jonah 1:1-2, Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me.”

The next few days I would like to share some questions I have been considering as a result of the eclipse that occurred on April 8 of this year. This past weekend, I had some quiet time when I read the first three chapters of Jonah to see if I could get some answers to what some have said about Jonah’s day and how it relates the eclipse that just occurred. But first, let me share some things about Nineveh.

Nineveh was the capital of the Assyrian Empire. It is located on the eastern bank of the Tigris River; It is located in the modern-day city of Mosul in northern Iraq. Nineveh is first found in the Bible in the Genesis 10:11. There we can read that Nineveh was built by Nimrod. Nineveh became known for its great power, wealth and prestige. The city included many temples including one to the Assyrian goddess Ishtar. The people of Nineveh also worshipped the god named Dagon and his female goddess, Nanshe; they were half fish and half man creatures. In addition to their idolatry, it must also be written that the Assyrians were known for their great cruelty.

That very short description gives a little background to why Jonah was sent to Nineveh with the warning they must repent. “For their wickedness has come up before Me.” Perhaps their great wickedness is why Jonah decided to try to run from God’s mission. But God

knew where Jonah was, interrupted his plans and got him back to Nineveh. There are a number of miracles found in the first two chapters of Jonah.

The first one is found in chapter one verse 4, “the Lord sent out a great wind on the sea”. God had everything under control in this situation; He wanted Jonah to go to Nineveh and not continue on in disobedience. Proverbs 3:11 tells us, “My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor detest His correction”. There is the idea of punishment involved here. However, chastening involves teaching or training rather than punishment for wrongdoing. I find it interesting that Jonah was “fast asleep” during the storm.

In verse seven the Bible tells us that the crew “cast lots” in order to find out who had caused this trouble to come upon them. The lot fell on Jonah. God, still in control, made sure that the outcome of this would fall on Jonah.

Moving on to verse fifteen, Jonah is thrown into the sea and “the sea ceased from its raging”. As soon as Jonah hit the water (my sanctified imagination), the storm stopped, and the water became calm. As a footnote, those on the ship who were terrified of the storm, now “feared the Lord exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice and took vows”. These vows were probably promises to offer more sacrifices when they returned safely to their homes. They would have quite the experience to share.

Chapter two begins with “the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah”. Again, this was not for punishment but to discipline Jonah and restore him to the plan God wanted him to accomplish. God always wants to restore those who step off the narrow way – just a reminder!

Veres 2-5 of chapter 2, Jonah expresses thanksgiving to God for keeping him alive in the belly of this fish. Jonah understands that God knows all things. I can’t really understand what Jonah must have experienced at this time!

Jonah 2:10, “God spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land”. Again, I write I can just imagine what this must have been like. God gets him where He wanted him to go. Don’t you believe God does the same for us. Think back to when you ran from God. Do you see His hand in your life getting you to where you are now walking on a narrow way into His kingdom for eternity?

So, in the next page of the blog, I want to go the questions I have regarding the eclipse and its relationship to the part of Jonah’s message to Nineveh.

LEARNING DAILY

Acts 2:42, And they continued steadfastly in the apostle’s doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and in prayers.

Pastor Hutch Kufahl filled the pulpit over the weekend at Community Bible Church; his message was about the Church (capital C) meaning the Church built upon Jesus Christ. He said in the first Church, mentioned in Acts 2:42-47, that there were no denominations, no buildings, were unified in their beliefs and met together to receive teaching from the apostles.

A.W. Tozer wrote this about the Church. “The true Church is a spiritual phenomenon appearing in human society and intermingling with it to some degree but differing from it sharply in certain vital characteristics. It is composed of regenerated persons who differ from other human beings in that they have a superior kind of life imparted to them at the time of their inward renewal. They are children of God in a sense not true of any other created beings. Their origin is divine and their citizenship is in heaven. They worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Jesus Christ and have no confidence in the flesh. They constitute a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people.”

Do you look at yourself as a Believer in this way? The true Church is made up of those who “desire to grow, are committed, and are all in” (Pastor Kufahl) in their walk with Jesus Christ on the narrow way. The early Church spent time together. The people shared meals together. They were united in their prayers before God as they worshipped and presented their needs to Him. As Believers they came together to be devout followers of the one who saved them from their sinful way of life. The result was being changed in the way they lived their lives. They lived lives in obedience to the teachings of the Lord as taught by the apostles. They were taught to live triumphant lives in the face of being rejected by their society who did not understand them. Because of their faithful living, “God added to the Church daily those who were being saved” (verse 47).

There is the True Church that is made up of those committed to walking the narrow way, to growing in their faith and facing the challenges of daily life by choosing to do God’s way. The True Church knows they do not have to face life alone; they gather together sharing their needs and the provisions God has given them to help others. Pastor Kufahl stated, “When you surround yourself with devoted followers of Jesus Christ, your life will change”. If you have done this, I believe you can testify to the change you have seen in your life.

However, there is also another group that calls themselves the church. They are those who show up to church in order to be seen, believing their business will flourish because they will be seen as honest and good. The church is made up of those who do not look different from any other worldly person who is prideful, self-centered, more concerned about being seen than worshipping the Lord and receiving from the Word of God. You know the church I am writing about!

People are drawn to the light of Jesus in you as you are part of the True Church. It is called to have the same heart as the early Church described by Paul in the book of Acts. The Church today needs to be where the gospel of Jesus Christ is lived and equipped to do what He desires to accomplish. The Church must be where this gospel is the center of all it does for without this gospel there is only a church. The Church must be where the true followers of Jesus Christ gather to worship Him and His Word as it is explained. It is then that the power of God will begin to show up!

LEARNING DAILY

Galatians 2:20, I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave His life for me.

This is Paul’s writing about what happens to the person who asks Jesus to save and change them! When a person does this, in faith, from their heart, it is as if the person is crucified with Him. Then He begins to live in that person. The notes in the David Jeremiah Study Bible writes this, “Being crucified with Christ has both a legal and a relational component. Legally, God looks at us as if we had died with Christ; we are no longer condemned for our sins because that price has been paid. Relationally, we share in Christ’s sufferings and have died to our old way of living; He now indwells us through the Holy Spirit, empowering us to live a life of obedience (Romans 6:6; 2 Corinthians 5:15).”

For those of us who are doing all we can to walk daily on a narrow way towards eternity in God’s kingdom, this is an important statement because we know God’s purpose is to replace or duplicate Jesus Christ in each of our once sinful lives. In other words, Believers accept the salvation Jesus offers through His death and resurrection by faith; Believers trust He paid for their personal sins. Grasp this next statement: Paul writes that Believers still live in their flesh but are no longer directed by it; they are directed by their faith in Jesus Christ.

Do not read further until you go back and read the last part of this verse. “… I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave His life for me”. God’s love for you motivated Him to send His son to deal effectively and finally with your life of self-centeredness, ego, and pride. The moment you asked Him to save and change you, you are to say no to the old self that desires only to cause problems. Do you find yourself continually stumbling on the narrow way, giving in to worldly and fleshly desires? Those desires continue to try to pull you into living the life you lived before you were saved. Remember the narrow way is not an easy way; Jesus said it would be a difficult one. Yet, because He lives in you, he gives you the power to say no to those things of the world and the flesh and the pride of life. That no longer is your identity. As you are saved, your new identity is with Jesus Christ in His crucifixion, burial, and resurrection! That comes from God’s Word to us. Believe it and stand on it.

That being written, you know that the process of being made ready for heaven while walking on the narrow way is not an easy process. It is so easy to write about taking a stand. However, too often Believers (and I have all these fingers on my hand pointing back at me), have too many excuses, too many crutches to lean on that support ego, pride, and reasons to cover up defects in our lives. Be careful about this. Pastor Newton made a statement last weekend that fits here. He stated, “God does not need my money and He does not even need me, but He chose me (each of you)”. It was His love for us that He provided a way to once again be a part of His family. Therefore, He comes to live in us when He saves us, committed to make us into the image of His Son. So, Believers are to be different, committed to following Him, in faith, walking the narrow way as best we can and in accordance with His Word. The greatest need a Believer has is Jesus Christ. He knows us intimately, even the numbers of hair on our head. He knows what we need, and he alone can do in us what we cannot do. He gives us the power and the ability to follow Him as He commands. He is continually working within each Believer because He loves us, and this is pleasing to the Father in heaven.  May I add that Jesus loves each of us too much to let us continue to live our lives contrary to His desires and His Word. He will never be done changing and shaping us into His likeness until that day we see Him face to face. In that day, we shall be like Him and see Him as He truly is (1 Corinthians 13:12)!

LEARNING DAILY

1 Peter 1:15-16, but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”

Do you believe personal holiness is important to God? Peter writes that it is. Read the verse again and you just cannot ignore Believers are to be holy. Why? God gives us that answer – it is because He is holy. It is His character and it is His command (Charles Spurgeon).

God gives us a choice in this. In John 6:53-65 taught what it meant to follow Him, to walk the way he demanded (in holiness). His teaching was often misunderstood, especially by those who were more concerned about losing their status and position of influence. Those people chose to no longer follow Him and walked away. Holiness is how he demands Believers walk the narrow way.

The Blue Letter Bible – Search and Study Tools states the words holy and holiness is found over 650 time in the Bible. The words refer to not only the character of God but to the character of angels and what heaven is like. The bible is clear that no unclean thing will be able to enter into heaven. It is a holy place where a holy God is. Read what the writer of Hebrews 12:14 writes, “Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord”.  The Vines Bible dictionary states this about holiness: “holiness is always rendered ‘sanctification’; it signifies separation to God. Sanctification is thus the state predetermined by God for believers, into which in grace He calls them, and in which they begin their Christian course and so pursue it.” Believers are to pursue holiness. It is “moral wholeness or kindness, mercy, purity, moral blamelessness and godliness” according to Charles Spurgeon.

Are you considering your walk with the Lord and comparing it to the above and thinking you do not measure up? Are you looking at yourself and becoming discouraged because you do not seem to meet God’s standard. Don’t do that! No one leads perfect lives – only the Lord Jesus Christ was perfect. Go back and read what Peter has written about Believers – they are saved, being saved, and will be saved. We are instructed “to be holy in all our conduct”. That means we are to do all we can to bring our life (what we think, say and do) in line with God’s will and to live life spiritually as He directs. Because Jesus has saved us and is in the process of changing us to get us ready for eternity in His kingdom, we must live as holy and set apart.

The last page of the blog established there was no true faith in God without Jesus Christ. It is only in Christ that we are holy, set apart. No Believer will be perfectly sinless in their conduct while walking the narrow way. It is in Jesus Christ that we must make right choices and live as holy people do. Believers are saved people; they must live like it. Believers are God’s people; they must live like it. Believers are meant to keep God’s commandments, to be like Him, to be holy because He is holy. That is God’s desire. Do you call yourself a Christian? Change your way of living to fit your identity. Always remember to rely on God’s grace and forgiveness. That is God’s standard, and it should be ours as well!

LEARNING DAILY

1 Peter 1:20-21, He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, who through Him believed in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

I have been thinking about the things going on in this nation, what people believe and what they do. Think about the outrage occurring over the issue of abortion. Consider the problems of men competing in women’s sports as females. Have you been reading about parents no longer having a say about reconstruction surgery of their children? Moral issues are being decided at the highest levels of government as well as being placed in the hands of liberal judges.

I read this statement some time ago by A.W. Tozer, “No nation can rise higher than its conception of God”. He went on to write when ancient Rome began to have a loose belief in God it began to rot away. I believe that might apply to the United States of America. This is not something that just occurs suddenly. I am old enough to remember reading the headlines that stated, “God is Dead”! I don’t know if this was the beginning of when America began to have a loose belief in God or not; all I know is American thought and the actions of people is not too different than the people of ancient Rome. Life for people of Rome caused the empire to rot inwardly and it did not stop until the Roman Empire fell.

Peter wrote that the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ was part of God’s plan – even before the world was created. This was not some improvised plan that God needed to come up with because Adam and Eve surprised Him by disobeying His command. It was always God’s plan to send His Son to offer those who would place their faith in Him a way of salvation and to place them on a narrow way in order to make them ready to walk into eternal life in His kingdom.  It was in the “last times” that God chose to send His Son into the world. God’s purpose for doing so was to reveal Himself and to save whosoever would believe in Him.

Peter writes it is through the Son, Jesus, a person begins to have true belief in God. It is only the faith in Jesus that allows us to come to the Father and then to walk that narrow way so often written about in this blog. Jesus is the only way, the only truth, and the only life. It is only by trusting Him that enables us to walk with the Father. Believers must get this down in their heart because any beginning with God that is inadequate or different leads to weak faith.

1 John 5:10 tells us that if one does not believe God has sent His Son to save us, rejects the truth and make God a liar. The only way one gets to know God is to read/study/meditate on His Word. Faith comes by hearing and reading the Word of God according to the Apostle Paul.

Hebrews 10:23 adds to this by telling us that if we do not waver in our faith and hold on to our confession of faith in Jesus we will go to Heaven. That adds to what has already been written here – Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of God’s will for every Believer, so Believers need to “hold fast” to His promises by doing our best to resist every pressure which tries to take us of the narrow way! That means Believers cannot, must not be careless in the way they live their lives or in their walk of faith. “Hold on” to the faith you have, continuing to trust in Jesus Christ because of what He has done and continues to do as you walk the narrow way. His promise to all Believers is to be faithful to us as we “hold fast” to Him.

LEARNING DAILY

Jeremiah 25:3, From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, even to this day, this is the twenty-third year in which the Lord has come to me; and I have spoken to you, rising early and speaking, but you have not listened.

By now you have seen that Iran has fired missiles and drones into Israel. I have thought about this and considered whether or not I should write about this. Yes, I have some thoughts; no, I do not have a word from the Lord to say this a fulfillment of a particular prophecy. I will write again the words of Dr. Ed Newton, “You better stay ready so you don’t have to get ready!”

The prophet Jeremiah had been prophesying for more than twenty years that judgment was coming to Judah for the way the people had been living. He had been telling them if they did not repent from their evil ways and come back to following God, judgment was coming. They heard what he said but did not listen; they had opportunity to hear the truth and repent but did not do so.

The people heard but did not listen! Does this not characterize the days we live in? My prayer is that if you are reading this blog, you are being encouraged to open your Bible to read/study/ meditate on what you read. Please do not read it in a lukewarm, casual, and I can check that off my to do list sort of way. I used to tease people with picking up a book and only looking at the pictures and saying they had read the book. Believers must not have this attitude with God’s Word!

When one opens the Bible, it needs to be read with the idea of how it can be applied to one’s life. Read it with the desire to discover what and how sin can be removed from your life. Do you see the desire the Lord Jesus has to reconcile to God the Father and deliver you from the wrath that is coming. If I read and interpret the Word of God correctly, times are drawing near where this world will see difficult things. Our way of life may be changing quickly. What we see with Iran attacking Israel may be the beginning of great changes. We just do not know. But we must be right in our relationship with the Lord and start to listen and not just hear.

Can I get to the point? As believers, we must have the desire to be made whole or walk with the Lord as He desires. This blog is centered on walking the narrow way after Jesus has saved us. It is a difficult way! Too many want to be saved but walk the broad way. You cannot do that; if you think that, you are fooling yourself! Following Jesus on this narrow way means getting rid of your self-centeredness and living the way He wants us to. If you are living to please yourself, trusting in yourself rather than living for Him and trusting in Him, you are only hearing but not listening.

The people of Jeremiah’s day heard but did not listen. Because they did not listen, they did not change their way of life. They did not believe there would be any consequences for the way they lived. They may have heard the prophet speak and that caused them to think they were okay. The reality of their lives showed they had no faith in God. They lived as if He was nowhere around them. They were wrong! Judgment came.

May this encourage you today. Get into your Bible. Read it/study it/meditate on it, applying it to your life. Allow Jesus and His Word change you, so you are ready for whatever is to come. Stay ready! I plan to spend more time doing just that!

LEARNING DAILY

Luke 6:38a, “Give and it will be given to you,”  Jesus

I had a great week visiting with my sister and brother (-in-law); but it is good to be home!

The message this weekend at Community Bible Church was about “Radical Generosity”. Pastor Newton made it very clear that this was not a message about money. He gave a good quote from Bob Marley, and it is a good start to this page of the blog. “Some people are so poor that all they have is money.” Those people hold on so tight to what money they have that it becomes so important they only think about how not to lose it. “Generosity begins in the heart and the hand responds to what the heart says” (Pastor). He went on to say. “It is not about what I own, but what owns me.” So, if the message was not about money what was he talking about?

He spoke about God wanting us to be good stewards of everything God has given to us. He reminded us of all the things God has given to us and that He wants us to give to others from what He has given us. Pastor continued saying that God wants to continue giving as we give from what He has already given to us. He used the example of how we have a closed hand, holding on tight to what we have when we should have an open hand giving from what we have. When we give with an open hand God continues to give because our hand is open to receive as well as give. The one with the closed hand is not able to receive.  “We give to get in order to give again!” Take a moment to reread that and allow Pastor’s statement to sink in and remember the hand reacts to what the heart says.

Allow me to write about the five ways we receive from God that He wants us to share with those around us. Remember as we share with that open hand, God continues to bless us with more. Yes, there is the financial blessings. God does not need our money; He gives in order for us to take care of ourselves but to also bless and help others. We certainly have that ability and that opportunity.

But there is so much more God gives us. For example, when Jesus becomes our Savior and Lord, we have the opportunity to tell others we know Him. Even more importantly, we can tell others that Jesus knows us. God knows me as His son! Because of that I can really know Jesus as I read/study/meditate on His Word. That keeps me on the narrow way where I begin to be more and more like Him. In that process I can share with others just what He is doing in my life to cleanse me, so I become more like Him.

In that process, I begin to gain wisdom and knowledge. That is not only knowledge from the Bible but through the “school of hard knocks”. You know what I mean. The wisdom and knowledge can be used to help others as they go through the various situations and circumstances they face. That means sometimes verbally encouraging someone or just listening. It might even mean helping through that open hand with financial blessings.

There is another way we can show generosity – through our relationships. That means being a friend. Pastor emphasized the blessing of having even just one true friend. I’m not talking about acquaintances; I’m talking about that person you can call in the middle of the night when the need arises or the person you can call and ask for them to pray, knowing they will and not just say they will.

The last thing Pastor mentioned about how we can reveal the generosity of God is through our physical capital; we are still breathing, still have a purpose in God’s plan. As a song says, “If you’re not dead, God has a plan for you!”

These things reveal the goodness of God to us! Each of us can share our financial wealth with those less fortunate. Each of us can share what Jesus has done in our lives to changes us. Each of us can share the knowledge God has given to us and can do our best to be the friend that others may need. All of us can be thankful for each breath we take, no matter what we face. All of this reveals the goodness of God to others and displays “radical generosity” to others!

“We give to get to give again”! That is a pretty good thought to keep in mind. And remember it is not just money!

LEARNING DAILY

Genesis 6:8, But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.

I have had this thought running through my head for some time; God forgave me of my sinfulness when I confessed to Him I was a sinner and needed His forgiveness. Since that time many years ago He has continued to forgive me over and over again. I am so thankful He never has given up on me! I am sure every believer can say that as well. That thought has continued to amaze me and I wonder why that is. Then I read this from A.W. Tozer, “God out of His goodness acts according to that goodness and does what His loving heart dictates that He do. Nobody ever got anything from God on the grounds that he deserved it. Having fallen, man deserves only punishment and death. So, if God answers prayer, it is because God is good. From His goodness, His lovingkindness, His good-natured benevolence, God does it! That’s the source of everything.”

Perhaps my thoughts have been caused by the celebration of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I have spent more time in prayer for those I know who “act” like they have never given their life to Jesus, for Him to save and change them. I have been thinking about eternity in God’s kingdom and the thought of being able to talk to the many individuals I have read about and studied in God’s Word; I am in awe of being able to do that! Tozer had something to say about these people as well. “Nobody has been saved, from the day that Abel offered his bloody lamb on a homemade altar, down to the latest convert made today, except out of the goodness of God. Because of God’s grace, His mercy, His lovingkindness, His goodness and graciousness, His cordiality and approachability, He kindly saved people.”

That means that everyone is saved only by God’s grace. The Old Testament men and women we read about today did not save themselves through anything they did. They were saved out of the goodness, the grace of God. Yes, they did the right things. Yes, they lived according to the way that was acceptable to God. Think of the significance of that. Noah was saved by God’s grace. So was Joseph, Moses, Daniel and David. All those who lived according to God’s commands were saved until Jesus’ death and resurrection. From that time on all who were saved are saved because by their faith and trust in Him. It is by the grace of God that any and all people are saved! It is by the undeserved favor of God alone that brings salvation.

Perhaps understanding the verse from Genesis about Noah can give us insight to God’s grace and why He continues to forgive us as we continue to sin as we walk the narrow way. God saw the wickedness of man on earth and was sorry He had made man. He looked upon the earth and saw that Noah trusted Him and his faith pleased God. “Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.” It was Noah’s faith and trust in God that qualified him as righteous. It is one’s faith that pleases God. It is out of the goodness of God that He does what He does in the life of the Believer.

To be blameless (or perfect in verse 9) refers to the person who is extremely obedient to God. It does not mean Noah was sinless or morally perfect – only Jesus Christ would live His life in this way. Noah did good things and didn’t do bad things and that set him apart from the rest of humanity at this time. Genesis 6:9 tells us, “Noah walked with God”.

Titus 2:11, “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men”. God’s grace has been given to all Believers, to all who follow Him faithfully. Believers must walk the narrow way the Lord Jesus has placed us on, walking in His light and making Him the priority of their life. Believers must “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness”.

LEARNING DAILY

1 Chronicles 21:1, Now Satan stood up against Israel and moved David to number Israel.

David was tempted and fell to the temptation to number the people of Israel. The same account is found in 2 Samuel 24:1 where the Lord’s anger is against Israel and He moved David to call for a census to number the people of Judah and Israel. So which account is right? Is this a contradiction in the Word of God? Well, no! Several things should be noted here. James writes in his letter that God never does evil nor tempts people to do evil! But He does use Satan or his demons to achieve His divine purpose. Secondly, David should have resisted Satan’s temptation.

Moses had taken a census of the people (Exodus 30:12) in order for each person to “give a ransom for himself to the Lord”; each person over the age of 20 would have to give a payment, which was the same regardless of their age or their wealth, to the building of the tabernacle. But David’s census was done in order to see how many warriors he had. Perhaps he wanted to know for future conquests. Perhaps it was for taxation purposes. However, the true reason was Satan appealed to David’s pride, his accomplishments, for him to say how many people he had under his leadership.

I wonder why God was so angry at David. Why was this such a problem? Pride is a major issue in people’s relationship to God – even Believers. The people of Israel were not David’s, they were God’s. David should have only counted the people when God directed him to do so. By taking the census he was really exalting himself and his accomplishments. David knew it was wrong and eventually admitted he had acted foolishly and repented of his wrongdoing. Yes, there were consequences for his actions; his disobedience brought suffering to the people of Israel.

Walking the narrow way is difficult. One reason is that Satan continues to tempt each Believer with all those old ways lived before asking Jesus Christ into our hearts and asking Him to change us. He continues to attack us with the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life. Each day Believers must choose to say no to the temptations that come our way and say yes to walking in the way the Lord Jesus demands we live. Sometimes those temptations are to help us grow closer to the Lord by increasing our faith and allowing us to increase our knowledge about the goodness of God and what awaits us as we enter His kingdom (for eternity).

In Luke 22:31, Jesus tells Peter that Satan has asked to sift him as wheat. It was a warning that Satan wanted to shake his faith so hard that he would fall. Satan wanted to do this to prove that he was lacking what he needed to serve God. I believe this is a warning not only for Peter but for every follower of Jesus Christ! Satan’s name means “accuser” and he does this continually. He told God that Job only was righteous only because God had built a hedge around him and blessed him. Satan said Job would curse Him if he had all his “stuff” taken from him. Satan’s tactics have not changed; he is still accusing each believer before God, pointing out every bad thing said and done. He is still trying to get Believers to do what they know would not please God. He is still “sifting” Believers as he did Peter. And Jesus is still allowing it in order to make each Believer stronger as he is tempted. Jesus told Peter that He had prayed for him, that his faith would not fail. Jesus still continues to pray, to intercede for each Believer so that when the temptation ends our walk with Him is stronger. That prayer includes reminding the Father that each Believer gave their life to Him.

If you are being “sifted” today, know the source of that sifting. If you are struggling with pride as David did, confess it and walk with the Lord on the narrow way in humility. If you are being tested today, walk in it knowing that you are not walking alone – Jesus is with you wanting you to trust in Him to walk with you through your circumstance. Jesus told His disciples, “In the world you will have tribulations, but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Take hold of that statement and believe it.

LEARNING DAILY

Matthew 7:24, “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who builds his house on the rock.”  Jesus

Jesus also said that if a person had faith the size of a mustard seed, a person could move a mountain (Matthew 17:20). John writes in his gospel about a nobleman whose son is near death. He must have faith that Jesus can heal his son. Whatever amount of faith he has he makes an effort to find Jesus. The nobleman travels from Capernaum to Cana of Galilee to “implore Jesus to come to Capernaum and heal his son” (John 4:7). Jesus rebukes him saying people need signs and wonders to believe. The man is persistent and repeats the need for Jesus to come with him. With that Jesus tells him to go; his son is healed.

The point is the need for Believers to exercise what faith they have, even if it is a small amount. I hope I’m not stretching anything here but the man went to Jesus. Believers exercise their faith when they go to Jesus in prayer. The man had received news that his son was near death. His only hope was to go to Jesus and plead for Him to come to heal the son. The nobleman must have heard what was being said of Jesus’ ability to perform miracles. Those of even little faith, today, must exercise that faith through prayer.

After the second time the nobleman urgently requested Jesus come with him, Jesus told him to, “Go your way; your son lives”. I wonder what made the nobleman “believe” this statement because he no longer asked Jesus to go with him; John writes, “he went on his way”. John writes that the nobleman believed, he trusted that his need had been granted him. On his way home, he met those coming for him and heard that his son had been healed at the precise time Jesus said he was.  I can only believe that the nobleman’s faith had grown considerably from when he had left to find Jesus. It had grown so much that he and his entire household believed in Jesus.

There are probably those who receive great faith when they receive Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord. But most Believers are only spiritual “babies”. Their faith must grow as they walk the narrow way.  Each Believer grows in their faith as they diligently seek more, as they “hunger and thirst for righteousness, they shall be filled” (Matthew 5:6).  As they ask, seek, and knock, they are going to find and receive. As one’s faith grows, it comes with a peace that nonbelievers and the world do not understand. As faith grows, one begins to “step out” in that faith using it to perhaps help others.

I believe that the nobleman did just that and becomes an example to Believers to be diligent about seeking the Lord Jesus in our prayer time. Our faith is built and strengthened by being in God’s Word – reading/studying/meditating on it and by spending time with Him in prayer. That takes us to the verse from Matthew. Believers grow in their faith when they do the things Jesus says to do in His Word and in our prayer time. Practice or do what He tells you to do as you read His Living Word found in the Bible. As you do, your faith will only continue to grow. The nobleman took Jesus at His word and his faith grew. I believe that is good for each of us today!

LEARNING DAILY

John 2:10, And he said to him, “Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!”

Pastor Ed Newton began the Easter service with the statement, “The best is yet to come”. I realize that the verse above comes from the wedding when Jesus turned the water into the wine. Pastor Newton did not use this verse; I was reminded of it when I heard his statement. The stone was rolled away from the tomb and the tomb is empty. Jesus paid the price for every sin you and I have ever and will ever commit. That’s the best news ever. Once a person “stops doubting and accepts that in faith”, that person is set on a narrow way that begins to change their life, making them ready to enter heaven. “The best is yet to come”. What does that mean?

I want you to consider how blessed you are as a Believer that you have placed your faith in the Risen Christ. Those great men and women of the Old Testament walked in faith they could only anticipate. Its like they drank the wine that was inferior but were never able to fully grasp or taste the wonder and goodness of the new wine the risen Christ gives to His Believers. Those walking in the wilderness were able to eat the manna and drink the water God gave to them; but Believers today drink freely from the living water only Jesus gives those who believe in Him. “But the best is yet to come!” Jesus is coming back to reign, and we will drink the new wine He brings with Him that He has kept for His return.

Until that time or the time the Lord Jesus takes a Believer “home” to heaven, Believers walk a narrow way that He Himself said would be difficult. There are those Believers that live day to day, not knowing where their next meal will come from. There are those who have physical ailments that must be endured. There are those whose ability to understand the Word of God is hindered due to a variety of reasons. There are Believers who live with persecution for their beliefs. But, let me encourage you that “The best is yet to come”.

The way of life Believers have had to walk the narrow way with – the sickness, pain, blindness, anxiety, and all the problems of this world are all going to be gone! Because the stone has been rolled away and the tomb is empty, every promise the Lord Jesus has made, all the beauty and promise of heaven is going to be seen. The Revelation tells us there will be no more sickness, no more pain, the weak will be raised in power because Jesus brings out the new wine as Believers spend eternity with Him in His kingdom. God will shine brighter than the light of the sun and will give His faithful followers rest as they worship and praise Him.  “The best is yet to come”.

Be encouraged as you, as a Believer walk this narrow way. Stay faithful! Don’t doubt – believe that all you are experiencing on this narrow way will be worth eternity in heaven! The problems and concerns of this world are going to come. The temptations of the flesh, eyes, and pride of life are going to come. There will be stress and anxiety that try to distract faith; they do not seem to go away. When they do, trust and rest in the Lord Jesus.

I want to close this page of the blog with what really excites me. Believers, the walk on the narrow way will be worth every trial, every temptation, every tear when we see Jesus faces to face and bow at His feet in thanksgiving, praise, and worship. Can you have any idea what that will be like? Also, consider that in heaven, Believers will be able to spend eternity talking with all saints read about in the Old and New Testament. Imagine sitting with Daniel and asking him about the night he spent in the lion’s den or Jonah when he was in the whale. Then you can tell them about how you came to know the risen Christ and walk with Him as your Savior and Lord. What about spending time with Moses or Joseph or any of the prophets and disciples? I can only imagine the fellowship that Heaven will have!

Yes, walking the narrow way is difficult; all believers have their testimony about that. Just remember: “The best is yet to come”. You are going to be able to say, “You have kept the good wine until now!”

LEARNING DAILY

John 20:1, Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.

“He is risen!”! “He is risen, indeed!” would be the reply from early Christians as they would greet each other. It was expressions of joy; the stone had been rolled away and the tomb was empty. The joy came because the Lord Jesus had been resurrected and He had accomplished victory over death and the grave. Pastor Ed Newton, Lead Pastor at Community Bible Church, said this weekend, “The stone has been rolled away and the grave is empty. The debt has been paid as Jesus Christ paid for every sinful thing you and I have ever done.” Pastor Jonathon Moore, Lead Pastor at NorthRock Church, said, “The resurrection changes things, changes everything; because of the empty tomb and the resurrection of Jesus, you and I are saved (when we place our faith and trust in Him).”

Read a little further and you will see the confusion of Mary Magdalane. “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.” There have been various attempts to explain the disappearance of the body of Jesus. Conspiracy theories are not new. Matthew’s account of the resurrection explains the bribing of the guards by the chief priests to say His body had been stolen is only one account explained by Pastor Newton. Mary is in the tomb and sees two angels sitting where Jesus had been laid. It is then she tells them why she is crying.

One of the points made by Pastor Moore was, “The resurrection changes confusion into clarity”. Mary was confused about where the body had been taken. Confusion and loss made it difficult to recognize Jesus when she turned around and saw Him. The last time she had seen Him was after he had been severely beaten and been on the cross. The resurrected Lord looked different! It is understandable that in her condition she did not recognize Him. Even when he speaks to her, she does not recognize Him. But when He calls her by name, something in His voice causes her to Know this is the Lord. Pastor Moore made sure the understanding of Mary turning to Jesus was understood. The word repent means “to turnaround”. The only way to find contentment that is so sought after is to turn to Jesus.

One other aspect of the message given by Pastor Moore this weekend. He said, “The resurrection can change doubt into trust”. Read verses 24-28 and you will see the first appearance of Jesus to His disciples. Thomas was not there and when he heard of the appearance of the resurrected Christ, he doubted. He said he would not believe without seeing with his own eyes. After eight days, Jesus appeared again to the disciples. He went to Thomas and showed him His hands and His side. The proof of the resurrected Christ was clear, and he declared Him to be, “My Lord and my God!” Thomas stopped doubting and believed Jesus was his Lord.

“The resurrection changes things, changes everything!” Thomas “saw” and believed. The Lord Jesus, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Stop doubting and believe! Faith is believing without seeing and when we believe, He changes everything (Pastor Moore’s message).

Pastor Ed Newton began his message this weekend with the statement, “The best is yet to come”! Tomorrow’s blog will break that down!
