LEARNING DAILY

Genesis 3:6-7, So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

Chadwick King gave the message at NorthRock Church this weekend. His intent was to explain why the fall of man was a “big deal” (CK). He took us to “the scene of the crime, to the beginning of the ‘Good News’, the scene of where salvation occurred. This way we can understand the problem to better understand what Jesus did for us, to obtain our salvation.” (CK).

He asked the question, “who is the serpent?” He answered it by taking us to Revelation 12:7-9 which states “that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan”. Do you see that the devil showed up subtly, looking nice and pleasant. He began asking questions about whether God said not to eat of every tree in the garden. Remember he used Eve to get to Adam who had received instructions from God. The idea is that the devil knows if he can get one to question God’s Word, he can lead us into directions he wants us to go.

Pastor King said that God’s covenant with man is one where one must say yes or no to – there is no in between. That can be a frustration for individuals because that means boundaries are set for them to follow. The devil is constantly trying to get Believers to look beyond those boundaries to see what others are “enjoying.” “The devil lies! What lies are you wondering about? What lies do you believe about God? About yourself? The devil says that God’s boundaries for you are not good for you.”

The devil told Eve she could be like God. What God had for her is not best. “Be careful who you talk with, who you allow to speak into your life. Be careful what voices you listen to and talk with. The wrong person can detour your life, the plan God has for you!” (CK).

The first thing Adam and Eve did was to cover themselves with leaves and hide from God. People do the same thing when they try to cover their sin – they try to hide it rather than face it. “We are not built for facing guilt, so we bury it” (CK). Why do we believe we can hide from God? “He is a better finder than we are as hiders” (CK). God sees everything and knows everything. “But God shows up just like He did for Adam and Eve. He is for us and finds us. Stop hiding, stop being isolated [when you sin]. You will never find healing by hiding” (CK). God asks Adam and Eve questions; He already knows the answers, but he wants Adam to vocalize what He is done. This is just what He wants believers to do when they sin – confess what they have done to Him.

Genesis 3:15, “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel." “This is the first ‘Good News’. God told the devil he went to the woman and now He would go through a woman. God was going to put His seed in her and would strike him down. Good Friday matters: it is the first prophecy of the coming of Jesus” (CK).

God then made clothes for Adam and Eve from animal skins. “God had something better for them. First, the animal had to die. Blood was shed in the Garden, and in the future, the Messiah’s blood would be shed for mankind. Galatians 3:27 says, “For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.” “That means Believers stand before God, the Father and He sees Christ, holiness, perfection, righteousness. That is the Good News, Believers can go boldly to the throne of God” (CK).

In the Garden God said. “I have you covered. It will be a while, but the promise is coming, a seed of hope is coming. Life no longer defined by what happens to us, but what happened for us. Jesus died a perfect death that we might have new life!” (CK).

LEARNING DAILY

Zechariah 9:9, “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, lowly and riding on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey.

Pastor Ed Newton said this prophecy was fulfilled on the tenth day of the month of Nissan, when Jesus crossed the Kidron Valley and entered Jerusalem. He mentioned that this tenth day of the month of Nissan was the same day Joshua entered into the Promised land. Interesting! “This day was not an accidental event; it was a day planned by God several hundred years before it took place. It was seen in God’s omniscience as Jesus knew where the colt was. He had already seen this” (EN). He continued, “Jesus was 100% man and 100% God. He had to fulfill every prophecy about Him. If He fails to fulfill one prophecy, He is not Lord.”

Pastor described how the colt had never been ridden before, never been trained for a rider. Yet God’s creation submits to Jesus, the donkey submits and obeys Him. Kings ride war horses riding back into their kingdoms in triumph; Jesus rode a donkey, a burden-bearer. “The one who would bear our burdens to the cross, rode a burden-bearer into the city of Jerusalem” (EN).

The tenth day of the month of Nissan was a day when lambs were being selected to be slain during Passover (EN). The shepherds were taking their sheep into Jerusalen to be selected through the gate known as the Sheep Gate. When Jesus came the people were lined up laying down palm branches and shouting “Hosanna! Hosannah!” Pastor said that the people wanted Him to enter Jerusalem through the Eastern Gate known as the Victor’s Gate – that was what they expected as they were looking for a Messiah who would deliver them from the power of the Roman Empire. He did not meet their expectation as He did not come to deliver the people from the Roman empire but to deliver them from their sins. Instead of the Eastern Gate He entered through the Sheep Gate with the shepherds and their sheep. “These same people who were shouting ‘Hosanna’ on this day would be shouting ‘Crucify Him’ later in the week because of failed expectations” (EN).

The question Pastor brought up relates to the vision of Jesus that people have today. “When we have a vision of Jesus that does not meet our expectations – doing what we want and when – what will you do? The world will never satisfy you!”

The religious leaders demanded that Jesus make those shouting ‘Hosanna’ be quiet. “The Pharisees were the ones who studied and knew Scriptures in that day. Yet, in the presence of Jesus they did not know Him. He always got tangled up with religious people. Opposition always comes from religious people [those with no relationship to Jesus]” (EN). Jesus answered them by saying, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out” (Luke 19:40). Jesus was saying if people will not praise Me, creation will. “Why did He specify rocks? It was because they were used as monuments, memorials, and pillars” (EN). Pastor concluded with Matthew 28:2, “And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it.” “Because the stone speaks: nothing can hold Jesus back. He is the forgiveness giver. Nothing is impossible with God. His grace and mercy is for all people. O death where is your sting? There is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. If you confess your sins, He is faithful and just to forgive your sins. Because the tomb is empty your life does not need to be empty” (EN).

The closing statement for this message is one to consider. “The people wanted a crown, but Jesus chose a cross.” Jesus knew exactly what was going to take place in the week ahead.

LEARNING DAILY

Judges 6:13a, Then Gideon said to him, 'O my lord, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? (NASB)

We meet a man by the name of Gideon threshing wheat in a winepress. He is hiding from the Midianites and Amalekites who come to oppress Israel by taking everything they could from Israel, devastating the people and the land. The people of Israel were once again living in an evil way; God had delivered them into the hands of these evil people. “Gideon is hiding in a pit in the ground where he would be less visible and less vulnerable to a Midianite attack” (David Jerimiah Study Bible).

And the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, "The Lord is with you, O mighty man of valor." (Judges 6:12). O mighty man of valor” – it seems to be a strange greeting for a man hiding. Bible authorities believe this angel was the Lord Jesus Himself appearing to Gideon and it was the Lord Jesus who “saw Gideon for who he would become, not as he was” (DJSB).

Read the discussion that occurred between the Lord Jesus and Gideon, and you will no doubt recognize a common human element of questioning God’s presence when difficult times happen. Gideon and Israel are facing difficult challenges. Gideon expresses doubt and uncertainty about God’s involvement in his situation. The question is raised throughout God’s Word: Where is God when we are struggling, suffering, or feeling abandoned? Read the rest of verse 13 and you will read Gideon and the people of Israel had heard of God’s goodness and power; they had been taught Israel’s history and knew enough to keep them from turning to the idolatry and evil ways of those people surrounding them. Yet the people had fallen into a pattern of repeating a cycle of indulging in those practices they knew were wrong. Gideon asks in verse 13 why God has forsaken them and allowed them to be subject to the Midianites.

Does this sound familiar to a particular time in your life? Have you or are you now questioning God’s presence in your life? Does He seem distant or quiet during challenging times you are facing? If so, this verse is a challenge for you to reflect on what it means to walk in faith and trust that God has a plan for you, even when you do not see it or understand what He is doing in your life. It is a challenge to seek His guidance and His strength, even as you might be doubting. Trust that He is present with you even when you do not see and in ways you do not recognize. It is an encouragement to deepen your faith and your reliance on God and His grace. You know how to seek Him in His word, in prayer, and by remaining committed in your faith, even when you cannot see clearly what is ahead. Faith is not trusting in yourself but trusting in the One who knows all that is ahead of you.

LEARNING DAILY

Luke 11:27-28, As he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, "Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!" But he said, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!"

In this passage Luke is writing about the differences between one who follows Satan and one who follows Jesus. A woman cries out that Mary is blessed for being the mother of Jesus. Jesus replied that being close to Him, even as part of His family, is not enough. To receive blessings, even His family members must choose to follow Him as their Savior. The statement of Jesus shows the need to be not only listening to His teachings and being in His Word (for us today) but also being obedient to them. It stresses that hearing or reading/studying/meditating on God’s Word is not enough. For the Believer that means he/she must act by walking the narrow way in obedience, living according to the teachings of the Word of God.

This is not condemnation, but encouragement for living according to God’s teachings. Believers should experience a sense of fulfillment, righteousness (right living) and peace in their lives because of obeying God’s Word. If this is not the case for you, take a moment to consider how your life might truly change if you would walk in godly principles and in the values taught in God’s Word. Do you see the importance of reading/studying/meditating on these things; the more you do, the more likely they become seen in your daily actions and decision-making. I have often had to think through my lifestyle, attitude, behavior, and the words I speak when reading God’s Word.

In James 1:22 Believers are encouraged to not only hear the word’s Jesus taught but to follow them. “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” In Matthew 7:24-27, Jesus compares those who built their life on the sand with those who build their lives on the Rock, on Him and His Word. Both verses of Scripture refer to not only hearing/reading but applying the teaching to the Believer’s life. Receive and put the Word into your heart and mind and then see how it changes your life.

Blessed is a term that implies happiness and God’s favor. When a believer truly is active in reading/studying/meditating on the Word of God, it becomes more than just feeling good. It becomes about knowing about Him, it is about being in a right relationship with God. When one consistently reads, studies God’s Word, a desire to understand and follow what it says follows (Perhaps the desire to understand and follow precedes it!?). When one approaches God’s Word with a heart and willingness to receive and obey it, the Holy Spirit will guide the individual into understanding and give strength and discipline to follow His instructions in walking the narrow way. Yes, this is a choice and a commitment. Are you ready to make it?

LEARNING DAILY

John 14:15, "If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”

According to what I found in an article by Barna, weekly Bible reading in U.S. by adults is up from a 15-year low of 30% to 42%. That is good, right? Yet, while more Americans are reading the Bible, they do not fully believe the Bible is accurate, according to the study. The article said that in the year 2000, 43% strongly agreed that the Bible is totally accurate in what it taught. Now the number is 36%; even among those who say they are Christians, only 44% believe the Bible is accurate. “Engagement is outpacing conviction. People are opening the Bible more often, but they are wrestling with what they believe about it. That gap between reading and trusting is worth paying attention to” (David Kinnaman).

I have two concerns this morning. My first concern is about what you have read often in the blog. It is my hope that you are encouraged to be reading/studying/meditating on God’s Word every day. I believe doing so is essential to the Believer’s growth and their desire to walk the narrow way in faith and obedience. In life it is so easy to dedicate yourself to so many things, to be so busy with work and activities without giving time to draw close to the Lord through His Word. The statement by Jesus recorded by John is a simple but profound statement emphasizing the importance of a genuine relationship with Jesus Christ that is not based on words only but on daily actions from a heart committed to following Him. Believers demonstrate their love for Him by knowing and keeping His commands; knowing His commands comes from being in His Word daily, not just an hour on the weekend. To borrow the words of Jesus from the last page of the blog, “Do you believe this?”

The second concern is that the Bible is read like one would read a novel, reading to check off a box on a “to do” list. Taking time to read God’s Word is not about reading a certain number of verses or chapters each day. No, it is about putting the Word of God in your heart; it is meant to be obeyed. That might be only a few verses that you really meditate on and study more fully. Right after saying this, Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit. Why? Accepting the truth of God’s Word is difficult because people resist God’s ways and reject the Bible’s truths without the presence of the Holy Spirit in their lives.

Believers are to demonstrate the relationship between the love for Jesus, obedience to His Word (His commands), and the presence of the Holy Spirit in their lives. The Holy spirit helps Believers understand God’s Word and demonstrate their understanding of it through how they live their lives. The Holy Spirit will guide Believers as the Spirit of truth, giving them the power and ability to live out their faith in a world that does not know the love and grace of Jesus Christ nor does not know if His Word is true or not. By reading/studying/meditating on the Word of God, Believers can show the truth and the power it brings to live the life God desires. Whose life could you touch by doing so?

LEARNING DAILY

John 11:25, Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?"

I would have liked to hear Jesus make this statement. What words did He emphasize? Did He ask, “Do YOU believe this?” Or did He ask, “Do you BELIEVE this?” Or did He ask, “Do you believe this?” Maybe it does not really matter. The question, however, is personal, it is direct to each of us because He loves each person. Jesus is talking to Martha about the death of her brother Lazarus. He is declaring His divine authority and giving her and all Believers a message of hope and eternal life for all who believe in Him.

“Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.” What assurance this statement is to Believers. It goes beyond all limitations of one’s earthly existence, pointing at an everlasting life that only Jesus can give. Believing in Him will result in eternal life with Him in His kingdom! Jesus showed Martha (and us) that the resurrection is a Person not an event, eternal life is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ; it is something that Believers experience right now, not some event that occurs in the future.

This question must be answered by each individual – not just an intellectual response. He wants to know if you believe he is the Son of God. Are you willing to confess He is the Lord of your life and willing to love Him with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30)? To do that is humanly impossible. Believers have been cleansed of their sin and have the Holy Spirit to help them to love Him and walk the narrow way to do the impossible. Living and trusting His promises of eternal life happens by trusting Him to give strength and guidance each day.

It is one thing to know the gospel intellectually. It is another to attempt to conform to its moral standards. That requires a personal decision each day to follow God’s Word, to be obedient to it, to imitate God’s love and compassion, and to seek to glorify and honor Him in all aspects of your life. It involves surrendering your will to His and allowing Him to transform your heart and mind so you can live according to His purposes. Jesus assures each believer that believing and walking with Him brings eternal life. That comes with the Believer’s active trust and commitment.

Acts 16:31 states, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved.” That requires Believers to transfer their reliance on their own efforts to trusting in Jesus Christ, trusting Him for your salvation, purpose, fulfilment, and joy.

“Do YOU believe this?”

LEARNING DAILY

Matthew 21:18-19, Now in the early morning, when He was returning to the city, He became hungry. And seeing a lone fig tree by the road, He came to it and found nothing on it except leaves alone; and He *said to it, 'No longer shall there ever be any fruit from you.'  And at once the fig tree withered.

Pastor Jonathon Moore continued with teaching on clips from The Chosen series. This weekend he taught on Jesus cursing the fig tree. “This is the only ‘destructive’ miracle Jesus performed; in doing this He was exposing and correcting a broken theology” (JM). Pastor mentioned the importance of what Jesus did by reminding the listeners that two of the gospel writers wrote about this event. Why? “Because Jesus was on a mission this week that does not end. He needed those who would come a long side of Him to share His message – then and now” (JM).

It is Monday of this very important week in the life of Jesus. Jesus had left where He was staying early in the morning to return to Jerusalem, and He was hungry. He saw a fig tree that was full with leaves; it looked like it would have fruit on it, but Jesus found it had no figs. The tree was deceiving as it had great potential but gave nothing. The tree gave the impression of vitality and fullness, but upon closer inspection, it was barren. Jesus used this moment to teach His disciples about genuine faith and the importance of bearing spiritual fruit.

Jesus used the barren fig tree to represent judgment on Israel for their spiritual barrenness despite giving the outward impression or show of being very religious. Cursing the fig tree is a powerful image of the spiritual state of Israel at that time. It certainly reinforces the idea that genuine faith should be seen by the Believer’s actions and spiritual fruit-bearing.

The message Jesus was sharing about the fig tree with His disciples is as relevant today as it was then. “Jesus has given every [Believer] potential to share His message. How could a tree that looked so healthy be so unfruitful? Be careful about being all leaves with no fruit” (JM). Notice in the version above that the tree is mentioned as being “alone.” “It is impossible to grow in the potential God has placed within you when isolated from God’s people. Learn you are not alone when facing difficult situations” (JM). Proverbs 27:17, “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.” (NLT). It is essential for Believers to be challenged, even questioned, by other Believers, if not they may remain dull. I am so thankful for those in my life who have spoken into my life, challenging me to grow in God’s Word and to walk the narrow way in faith and obedience. I am thankful so many were there to help me get up when I fell. I needed that helping hand and encouragement often!

Pastor said that “image is not fruit. Jesus needed figs – not leaves. When leaves are present, fruit is advertised. It is a bad place to be – pretending to be okay (having leaves) but not being okay (no fruit).” He continued, “You can fool others, you cannot fool God! God is not impressed with what you show, only with what you grow!

Pastor said, “Don’t be a pretender, be a doer.” John 10:10 tells us that Jesus said He came to give us life, an abundant life. That does not mean an abundance of ‘stuff’ but the desire and ability for Believers to show what He has done for them. The abundant life He gives you is not just for you but so other can see it and be blessed with it as well.

May Jesus (and others) not just see the leaves in your life but the fruit that comes with them!

 LEARNING DAILY

Psalm 77:11-12, I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your wonders of old. I will also meditate on all Your work and talk of Your deeds.

Jeremiah 29:13, “You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.” I believe that is one of the greatest promises found in God’s Word. It is the core of faith and shows the power of seeking God. Seek Him with your whole heart and you will eventually find Him; that seeking requires a genuine desire to build a relationship with Him. The difficulty in this is when God seems to be quiet and that takes us to Psalm 77.

The Psalmist is wondering if God has rejected him, wondering if God loves Him. There are no details about the difficulty he is facing; his prayer feels intense and honest, keeping him awake at night. Praying and seeking God’s will intensifies his misery. Are you able to relate when you try to understand the circumstances you face? Have you ever asked God if He sees what you are facing? Have you asked if God really cares about these events?

In verse 11 of the Psalm Asaph “remembers” what God has done in the past. Perhaps he remembers reading about what God has done in previous times for Israel. Or perhaps he remembers what God has done in the past for him. Asaph’s attitude changes as he meditates on the deeds God has done and the miracles He has done for His people.

Is this not the focus of Biblical faith – trust based on knowledge (reading/studying God’s Word), which leads Believers to obedience even when the next moments or days are not certain. Remember that Jesus Christ saved and changed you. That He saved you from an eternity separated from Him and gave purpose to your life, should tell you of His great love for you. Remember those times He brought you through difficulties that you had no idea how you would get through. Remember the answered prayers in the past; remember His faithfulness.

Not only does Asaph remember, but he decides he will continue to meditate on the God’s Word to find God. Reading/studying/meditating on the Word of God is the only sure way to come to know Him and make the right conclusions about His love, faithfulness, grace and mercy. Read Psalm 1 and see that those who meditate on God’s Word are called blessed. Psalm 1:2, “But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night.” Believers become strong, fruitful, and better able to face the challenges that come, the trials and temptations that come as they walk the narrow way. Neglecting the Word, leaves one open to the lies of the world and the devil, who only desire to convince you that God has left you on your own.

When difficult times come – remember!

LEARNING DAILY

Romans 10:17, So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (NKJV)

When a person believes it comes from hearing the Word of God. God send His representatives to preach the Word to give those who hear it an opportunity to believe it; those who call on His name will be saved. Faith comes from the Greek word pistis, which means “belief, trust, or confidence in someone or something.” Faith is the key to the book of Romans.

Why write about this today? I do not know where anyone who reads this is in their walk with Christ. For me I need to be in God’s Word daily (hearing the Word) to help my faith grow. Hearing the Word is not a guarantee that the person hearing will receive it. Many hear, today, and refuse to believe. May I suggest that one can receive the Word without audibly hearing it; one can read the Word and receive it by faith. Faith requires an active involvement with Jesus Christ. Being in God’s Word daily can help the Believer make it personal by not only reading it, but by studying and reflecting on it – doing so builds and strengthens the faith of the Believer who does so. Consider the importance of this. Faith requires knowledge and understanding. How can one have faith in something that they do not know and have some understanding about? Even with knowledge and understanding, the Believer’s faith becomes deeper as he/she opens their heart to receive what God’s Word has to say each day. The Bible is fresh and new each day to the Believer who opens it with a heart truly desiring to hear from God.

Hearing the Word of God helps Believers to understand the teachings, the promises, and the commands of Jesus. When the believer hears (reads) the Word of God, greater knowledge of God’s character, love, and faithfulness is gained so it can be applied to their life. Applying the truths of God’s Word can lead to a deeper faith. May I suggest that when one’s heart is stirred up and conviction sets in, one’s beliefs and actions are transformed. The message of God’s Word has the power to challenge, inspire, and encourage the Believer who takes the time daily to read/study/meditate on it; that leads to respond in faith and obedience.

My hope is that those who read this today are challenged to be in God’s Word daily, allowing it to encourage and direct your steps. It is certainly an investment to grow your faith.

LEARNING DAILY

Philippians 3:13-14, Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Keep moving forward as you walk the narrow way, focusing on the ultimate goal of reaching eternal life with God in heaven. Paul is writing to tell Believers that no matter what mistakes they may have made in the past, they should learn from them and not allow them to hold them back or weigh them down. He relates this to a runner who is focused on the finish line, Believers are to put all their efforts into living a life that reflects their faith and values.

Notice what Paul wrote, “But one thing I do.” Focus puts the priorities of the Believer in order. He had one thing to do and that was to focus on the “goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” “Once you define your priorities, they begin to define you” (OS Hawkins). Begin and live each day with the sense of purpose and dedication to living a life that honors God and keeps you walking closer to Him in obedience.

“Forgetting” means to dismiss the mind or to not pay attention to; it is to stop dwelling on something. To win the race, stop looking around, stop looking back or behind. Paul’s encouragement to “straining forward (or reach forward to) what lies ahead” is given so Believers do not allow any distraction to interfere with their growth in their spiritual walk. One’s personal growth as a Believer was Paul’s priority in life; his writing suggests he did everything he possibly could to keep moving forward to win the prize God had for him to receive.

Paul’s goal was perfection – but he writes he had not yet achieved it. It is necessary to tell you as a Believer, you and I are not perfect either. Sorry! We all have our faults, do not expect perfection until your race is over and you step into heaven. Paul gives Believers the example of living their lives for Christ without other goals interfering with the prize ahead.

Hebrew 12:1-2 tells Believers to run the race with their eyes, their focus on Jesus Christ. Holding on to such things as bitterness, unforgiveness, or anything else that holds you back from pressing on to prize Jesus Christ has set before you must be gotten rid of. Going over past conflicts and times you have been hurt by someone only opens hurts that do benefit you. Paul tells Believers to be done with all those things; get rid of every deception, “every sin that so easily ensnares you… and look unto Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith.”

It is so important that the Believer’s focus should always be on pursuing a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and aligning their lives with His will. That demands one to persevere through all the things that come their way – the “good, the bad, and the ugly.” That can only be done by “forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Keep your life focused by Keeping Jesus as the center of it.

LEARNING DAILY

Mark 5:22-25, Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. He pleaded earnestly with him, "My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live." So, Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around him. And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years.

Jonathon Moore, Lead Pastor at Northrock Church continued the series Jesus Stories with a clip from the television series The Chosen. In this clip Jesus responded to the “desperate faith of Jarius”, one of the laymen in the synagogue. On this day, the need of Jarius was so great he found Jesus, fell at His feet, and begged Him to come heal his daughter. “So, Jesus went with him.” Pastor Moore said, “Jesus responds to desperate faith.”

Pastor talked about four words that describe the healing of Jarius’ daughter. The first word is DESPERATION. “Jarius was well-educated, serving as a layman tasked with overseeing certain administrative details of running local synagogues. Though not a priest, he supervised the care and operation of the synagogue and its worship” (David Jeremiah Study Bible). He was well respected, “but on this day he did not care about any of this – he fell at the feet of Jesus in desperation” (JM). He continued, “True desperation drives people to the feet of Jesus to earnestly plead for their need. Desperation removes pride, stripping away the illusion that we are in control of the situation.” Approaching Jesus and falling at His feet speaks volumes about his humility and recognition of His divine power. “Faith is not about pretending that everything is good, it is about bringing everything to Jesus” (JM). Jarius’ act of faith should remind Believer’s today of the hope and comfort that can be found in turning to God in times of stress and need.

The second word describing this miracle is DELAY. On the way, Jesus was stopped by a woman who had an issue of blood. Another situation. Another need for one desperate for a healing. A delay. “Delays are not fun. We all have experienced God’s delay, when prayer seems to be unanswered, have not been realized. But God does not put a timeline on our need – we do.” (JM). What do you do, how do you react when things are not happening as fast as you want? Hebrews 6:12, “We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised” (NIV). Believers stay focused in your faith and be patient. “Jesus stopped to take care of the woman’s need – He always has time for those in need” (JM). That includes you! There is no limit to the power of Jesus. Pastor asked, “What is God teaching you while you wait? Let someone else’s blessing encourage you about getting yours, and others need to hear what Jesus has done for you as well” (JM).

The third word is DETOX. “What are the toxins in your life that are causing your faith to falter? Is it people? Sin? What do you need to get rid of in your life that prevents faith from rising? Faith rises in the right environment; get rid of all the negative stuff. When Jesus got to the house of Jarius, He cleared the room of all the negativity that impacted faith” (JM).

The fourth word is DELIVERANCE. “When Jesus speaks life returns, the atmosphere changes, and possibilities move” (JM). The story of Jarius serves as an example of the power of faith when adversity comes. It is an example for Believers to approach God with a sincere heart, just as Jarius did. Let the desperation of Jarius ignite a fire in your faith today; take bold, courageous steps, trusting Jesus with your need. Seek Jesus with passion and knowledge that He can do all things.

LEARNING DAILY

Matthew 18:21-22, Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, "I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times. (NIV) (Read Matthew 18:21-35 for the entire context of this message.)

Pastor Marquise Cox spoke at Community Bible Church this weekend about forgiveness. He said forgiveness is not a feeling. Forgiveness is not forgetting – forgiving when one forgets about what needs to be forgiven. Forgiveness is not fair – What if God gave you what you deserve? He said forgiveness is not reconciliation – it is one-sided, me forgiving you. “Forgiveness is not part of our culture. Jesus had a whole lot to say that was different from what culture says about forgiveness” (MC).

He defined biblical forgiveness as “the one-time and on-going decision to cancel the debt of someone who has wronged you and release them from what you believe they owe you.” “Forgiveness is required from Believers. The power to forgive in your [the Believer’s] hand; it is not based on anyone else” (MC). Peter asked Jesus how often he was to forgive the brother who sinned against him.  The standard Jesus gave him was not meant to be a specific number (seventy-seven or seventy times seven). Jesus’ reply of 49 or 490 times, depending on your version of the Bible, was not meant to mean after that number you could stop forgiving the person. No, Jesus meant that forgiveness was to be limitless; it was to be for a lifetime, a lifestyle. “There is to be no ‘I forgive, but….’ when you forgive another” (MC). The ability and the power to forgive like Jesus said comes through the power of the Holy Spirit.

In the passage a servant owed what would be an impossible debt to repay to a king. The servant begged for forgiveness and time to repay the debt; the king had mercy and allowed him to be released. Consider yourself to be that servant whose debt is so great that you will never be able to make it right, to do anything that would cancel it. Your sinfulness, your disobedience, your self-centered lifestyle is so opposed to what God’s standards are; you will never be able to be “good enough” to clear yourself so you can enter God’s eternal kingdom. But God, in His great compassion sent His Son Jesus to take the debt you owe so that all who believe on the Son might have eternal life in His kingdom. When Jesus had been nailed to a cross, he said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do” (Matthew 23:34).

The message for Believers today is to forgive those who have done something or said something to them that, needs to be forgiven. “Harboring unforgiveness results in a bitterness, a rage toward that person(s). It gives power to the person you refuse to forgive” (MC). Believer, you must not forget how much you have been forgiven. There might be someone you are struggling to forgive. Pastor Cox said this is different from refusing to forgive that person. Forgiving the person begins with remembering the debt God has forgiven in your life. Pray for the well-being of the other person and “stop keeping the receipts of those who have wronged you” (Take away statement on the Sermon Notes page).

LEARNING DAILY

Colossians 2:6, And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. (NLT)

It is by God’s grace that Believers recognize they are sinners in need of a Savior – that is the beginning of their walk with Jesus Christ. Paul is clear that when Believers place their faith in Jesus Christ, they are to continue their walk with Him in faith. This walk is living and thinking like He does. False teachings were found in Colosse just like the many false teachings today that try to give people an easy way to live and still get to heaven. Those teachings emphasize works and personal sacrifice in pleasing God. Yes, Believers are to do good works; these works are the result of being saved, not the source of salvation.

The emphasis in this verse is to stay connected to Christ and to be rooted in one’s faith. There have been strong winds in our area lately. Just like the trees needed a strong root system to stand in the storms, Believers must have a strong foundation in Christ to get through the challenges faced in life. That happens by allowing God’s Word – that we put in our heart by reading/studying/meditating on it daily – so it guides their actions, thoughts, and decisions. By being continually in His Word, the Believer is established in the faith, which means having a deep and solid belief in God’s promises and His power.

Paul is writing to challenge Believers to live in a way, to walk the narrow way that reflects their faith in Jesus. He wants them to walk so the light of Jesus in them shines brightly for all to see. He wants everything they think, say, and do to bring glory to God. The ungodliness and evil around is growing and showing its ugliness more each day. Colossians 2:6 is not about some intellectual walk but a great commitment to allow the Holy Spirit to change you, to transform you to look, talk, and walk like Jesus. When Believers received Christ as their Savior, they acknowledge Him as their Lord; that implies that He has authority over their lives.

“You must continue to follow him” is instruction to continue to walk in faith. To “follow” or “to live” is not a passive activity, but how Believers are to walk the narrow way daily! To daily live in Christ means allowing his teachings and the Holy Spirit to guide your actions, decisions, and attitudes. Do you remember the WWJD bracelets and slogan. It was a reminder about What Would Jesus Do. With all the distractions and challenges faced each day this is a great reminder to get and stay anchored in Jesus. Each Believer faces a world that is often in conflict with biblical teaching. This verse challenges Believers to evaluate where they place their trust and how they walk daily with Him.

LEARNING DAILY

1 Corinthians 10:31, So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Today’s page of the blog comes with the focus from yesterday’s, allowing the light of Jesus in you to shine so God is glorified. Paul was addressing those living in the city of Corinth. Paul wrote to address how the Corinthian Christians were to address the idolatry that was all around them. “Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

As a Believer, don’t you find joy in giving God glory, by doing things through your actions, the things you say, and even your attitudes. When facing decisions, honoring God is a guideline to making right choices. Will your actions or what you say when tempted glorify Him? I believe that knowing whether what we do or say will honor Him will help Believers know that even the daily activities of eating and drinking can be done in ways that reflect God’s goodness and grace.

Jesus said that walking the narrow way would be difficult because the enemy, the world, and the flesh will try to tempt us to desire those things contrary to the Word of God. Consider for a moment the number of temptations that come your way during the day. Temptations come in different ways for each Believer, and in many ways these temptations are the same. What do you do when faced with temptation? Do you rush forward, make quick decisions, or pause and consider what is happening. I understand that it is not always possible to pause for long; just be ready, knowing that your actions or words are important. You know what tempts you. When faced with temptation ask: “Can I thank God for what these words or actions will result in? Can I do or say this in Jesus’ name? Can I do or say this for God’s glory?” (O S Hawkins).

Why is this important to a Believer. 1 Corinthians 10:24 tells us, “Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor.” How many times have you heard or read that others are watching you, especially if you have professed to be a follower of Jesus. They want to see if your walk matches your talk. They might even want to catch you in a situation that does not honor Him. Doing all to honor God will not cause problems for other, even other Believers.

Your everyday actions are an expression of your faith and devotion to God. Have you considered that? This verse challenges every Believer to consider the intention or motive for what he/she is doing; even the small things can be meaningful and significant when done with a heart that seeks to live for and honor God.

May this verse and thought help each believer to remember that every task, every interaction, every decision is an opportunity to glorify your Father in heaven.  Be inspired to live a life that is devoted to God, where every action, every word spoken can honor Him.

LEARNING DAILY

Matthew 5:16, In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

What does letting your light shine look like? Light is meant to be seen by those in darkness. As a Believer the light of Jesus in you is meant to be seen by the works, the things you do and by what you say – those things Jesus meant for you to do. But understand it is not your light but the light within you produced by God. It is the way you act and speak, and what you do in a Christ-like way that others see and glorify God.

There are many ways to allow your light to shine before others. You can show compassion and kindness to all people. That includes generosity with our money, time, and resources; everything belongs to God, so it is a matter of sharing with others what He has blessed us with. Forgiving others as we have been forgiven is another way to allow the light of Jesus in us. Seeking reconciliation with those who have wronged us as well as those we have wronged promote peace and unity. Perhaps the greatest way to show the light of Jesus is to share what He has done for us by saving and changing our lives. Allow the Holy Spirit to lead and guide you as you share what Jesus has done for you. The purpose of allowing your light to shine is not to draw attention to yourself but to live in a way that will glorify your Father in heaven.

The example you set by living the life of a Believer makes a positive impact on the world – an example for others to follow. Imagine the impact your example can have on those around you. Yes, people are watching how you behave not only when life is good but, in those times, when life is difficult. Actions speak volumes about the goodness and the love that Jesus brings when He changes your life. His light in Believers, light the way to Jesus for those in darkness. His light in you has the power to lift up others and cause them to seek what it is in you that causes you to be different. The times we live in might be what causes those in darkness to truly seek out those who act and speak differently. Be willing to speak the truth, to share whose light it is in you, and how He has helped you walk the narrow way.

A lighthouse provides a beacon to lead ships safely to a harbor. It casts a warning during storms that give direction to safety. Who around you need that light? Show them the power of God’s goodness and love through your words and deeds you bring to this world. Ready to inspire others and transform lives with your light? Jesus Christ is the only spiritual light in the world, and His light goes throughout this world through those who believe and follow Him.

Do all you do in the name of Jesus and do all you do for His glory.

LEARNING DAILY

Matthew 16:15, He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"

NorthRock Church is using scenes from the television series, The Chosen, to use as the basis of the message each week. This week Pastor Winston Harris spoke about the question Jesus asked His disciples when at Caesarea Philippi. This question was asked after Jesus wanted to know who people said He was. The answers of the disciples reflect people’s thoughts today – “there are all sorts of thoughts about who people think Jesus is” (WH).

Josh McDowell wrote in his book, More Than a Carpenter, that Jesus Christ was either a liar, a lunatic, or He was Lord (mentioned by WH). Pastor Harris stated, “How you see Jesus determines how you see everything else. There are those who see Jesus as a Santa Claus figure who “exists to give them what they want” (WH). Others “see Him as always angry” (WH), ready to punish a Believer the moment something wrong is said or done. Others get their view of who Jesus is “from social media or from some other public opinion platform” (WH).

But Jesus makes it clear everyone must answer the question for themselves. Be very careful how you answer – your eternity depends on your answer. Being familiar with who Jesus is or knowing about Him is not enough. He wants you to be in a personal relationship with Him, to walk with Him on His narrow way. Pastor’s example about just knowing Jesus “is like chewing someone else’s gum.” Gross, right! He continued, “You have the activity but no juice. The question is never about what Jesus can do for you; but about knowing Him personally!

Peter answered by saying, “Simon Peter replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." In Matthew 16:17, Jesus said, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.” His answer showed that He understood Jesus to be both the promised Messiah and to be divine. “Peter did not get his answer from just anywhere. It was revealed to Him by His Father in heaven. And so does the Holy Spirit reveal to each person who has placed their faith and life in the hands of Jesus.

In Matthew 14, The disciples are in a boat, being tossed around by the waves. Jesus comes to them by walking on the water, makes sure Peter does not drown, and calms the sea. Their response is “Truly, You are the son of God!” storms in the lives of Believers can be a time of revelation, a time when He can provide only in the way He can. “You cannot be casual in a storm. It may be a time to see Jesus as you never have before. It may be a time when you experience Jesus for yourself, not through the experiences of others. It in those times that Jesus changes your name like He changed Simon Peter’s name to Peter. It is when Believers declare they are His that your identity changes and your destination shifts” (WH).

Pastor Harris concluded by saying “Your destination runs through His Church.” He continued, “Jesus Christ is the Head and Believers make up the body of the Church. Through His Church the Believer has access to His kingdom (Matthew 16:19). As a Believer you have keys to the kingdom – use them to unlock the doors you need.” Jesus gave Peter (and to Believers) keys that would help him (and us) preach and teach about the kingdom of God. The gates of hell shall not prevail against the Church that Jesus is the head of!

LEARNING DAILY

Ecclesiastes 3:1, 5, For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven… a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing.

Pastor Maurice Cox spoke at Community Bible Church this weekend on the importance for Believers to evaluate the relationships they have in their lives. He said, “As Believers a time comes when there is a need to walk away from certain relationships – expired relationships or those relationships that no longer benefit them.”

The writer of Ecclesiastes recognized this when he wrote, “a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing.” This is the action of letting go and holding on to relationships (in this case). Pastor Cox said to “evaluate your relationships, your friendships. Stop being casual about who you are friends with.” I imagine that all Believers have friends that do not understand their relationship to Jesus Christ and the desire to walk the narrow way that He demands. These “friends” may be a hinderance to fulfilling the role Jesus has for you to fulfill as His follower.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, Solomon writes about the seasons of life that individuals go through. He writes that in this life these seasons have their appointed time and purpose; each experience points the individual to being in alignment with God’s plan for their life. One of the important seasons is when the Believer realizes the need to walk away from those who may have been their friends for a long time. “It is not a matter of if one walk away, but when” (MC).

Proverbs 13:20, “One who walks with wise people will be wise, but a companion of fools will suffer harm” (NASB). The New Living Bible says, “associate with fools and get into trouble.” In other words, choose your friends wisely. A fool rejects God, while a wise person seeks God and godly wisdom. Pastor cited the life of Samson; his relationship to Delilah was not a good choice. He kept going back to her against God’s will, “playing around with God’s grace, until God gave him over to his own desires. When God departed from Samson, he did not even know it.” (MC).

This message was an important reminder for Believers to understand their social circles can impact their lives. Set boundaries and surround yourself with people who are going to help and encourage you to walk as Jesus wants you to walk, those who will help you make wise decisions and be a positive influence with your walk on the narrow way. Believers are more likely to make wise decisions and walk like Christ by choosing to walk with the wise.

LEARNING DAILY

Romans 5:8, But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Have you ever taken the time to really consider the love of God, to try to understand it? Love is not some emotion that sits still, love acts. Yes, we misuse this word too often. I would like to explore this action God took for you and me when we did not deserve it. God “demonstrated” love when His Son died for sinners, for those who were murdering Him, for those who rejected Him. Consider other religious belief systems where it is taught that humanity is left to work their way to God; but with the God of Christianity He came to earth, came to humanity to provide a way to eternity with Him. The love of God is not a theory. He demonstrated and proved it through His Son.

This is a powerful verse showing us God’s unconditional love for each of us. You did not need to do anything; you did not need to meet any conditions for Him to love you. You did not need to prove you were worthy before He would love you. No, God’s love is not dependent on anything but His pure and selfless love. Despite all the mistakes you have made, despite all your failings, and despite the sins you have committed, God sent Jesus to take your place, to be judged for your unworthiness – because He loves you.

Take time to consider that. It is a challenge for each of us to consider the depth of God’s love and it causes us to respond in gratitude, awe, and a desire to walk the narrow way according to His will. Taking time to think about what He has done for you by saving and changing you should affect your relationship with Him. It should help you respond in your daily life and your interaction with those around you.

One practical way to do this is to be willing to put the needs of others before your own. “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Sacrificial love – it involves selflessness and the willingness to make personal sacrifices for the well-being of others, even when it may be difficult or even costly to you. It means showing love to others without expecting to get anything in return. That is how God loves you and me. Here is what this all means. Believers can, and are to serve others by forgiving them, with compassion and grace, even when they do not deserve it. Does anyone come to mind? It does for me! Living in sacrificial love may cause you to go out of your way to help those in need or those who have wronged you. It involves paying down your own desires, comforts, and even your life for the sake of others. That is what Jesus Christ did for you.

Ultimately, God’s love for Believers provides the foundation for them to love others. “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God” (1 John 4:7).

LEARNING DAILY

Ephesians 4:22-24, …put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

When talking about “renewing your mind” one must understand Paul is talking about no longer practicing the way one lived before their conversion. The “old self”, as Paul calls it, is doing the sinful things done before coming to know and follow Jesus Christ. It also means giving in to deceptive thoughts; sin is deceptive, causing us to think that which is harmful is what is best for us.

Paul is writing to remind Believers that “being renewed in the spirit of your minds” is to be transformed into the “new self” through a process of personal and spiritual growth. It is getting rid of those old ways, habits, speech, and beliefs which no longer serve the Believer, that do not show a new life in Christ. As a Believer, you help this happen by no longer doing what you did or allowing your mind to think on those things you used to allow. This is not a one-time event, but a continuous, daily part of walking the narrow way. It is a willingness to let go of past behaviors and attitudes that do not line up with righteousness and holiness that God’s Word teaches. Can I say from experience that is a mindset that embraces and strives for a higher moral standard to live by each day. It is a daily effort to live according to what the Lord wants.

Paul calls this “renewing your mind”. I know how difficult some of that old way of thinking is to correct. Some of those old habits and thoughts are difficult to give up. The “old self” had been deceived for so long. When Jesus saved me, there was stuff difficult to give up. It took great desire to “put off the old self”; I had to “take every thought captive to obey Christ”. I learned that these battles were going to be fought in my mind and heart. Wrong thoughts lead to wrong actions, which lead to disobedience to Jesus Christ. Because that is true, right thoughts must lead to right actions and obedience to Him.

The process to “renew your mind” begins with the decision to stop thinking like you used to, surrender your old ways, and allow the Holy Spirit to change and transform your thoughts, attitudes, and even your perspectives so they can be aligned with God’s Word, His will, and His purposes. Doing so will allow you to walk the narrow way in God’s truth as it fills your mind. I had to be reading/studying/meditating God’s Word daily, in prayer, and be with other Believers so my mind would be renewed. It took time, but eventually God changed me. I still must continue this daily routine.

When Jesus said walking the narrow way would be difficult, He meant that the enemy would challenge you in your mind daily trying to deceive you. That challenge comes in all forms; it most often begins in your mind. That is why a godly routine, seeking to conform your mind to the mind of Christ is so important – no matter how long you have walked with Jesus, no matter how much you know about His Word.

LEARNING DAILY

Romans 12:2, And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

Several days ago, a page of the blog was about the battle going on to control the mind of the Believer. The battle is a spiritual battle where the enemy tries to get you to look at what you should not look at, to think about things that are sinful, to form your own opinions about truth, and to act on these things. Satan continues to tempt every Believer, every day. James wrote, “Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God," for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.”  “Temptation is inevitable; no on escapes it, not even Christ. Yielding to temptation is sin; temptation itself is not a sin. Temptation is also not a single event but a process that involves four stages: enticement, entrapment. endorsement, and enslavement. The key to overcoming temptation is not just to resist but also to change one’s thoughts” (David Jeremiah). That is the subject for today.

The verse above is about renewing one’s mind, for Believers to challenge their thoughts and beliefs and to want changes to occur within them. Renewing your mind is about no longer following the ways of the world, which are often focused on things that are quickly passing on or materialistic. Consider, for example, how often you find yourself thinking about or doing things because others are doing them. The verses about renewing your mind are about self-examination, growth, and aligning your life as a Believer with the deeper, more meaningful truths of God’s Word – about living them out. Consider the following.

God’s will for every Believer is good. God’s word tells us that He is fully good (Luke 18:19) and there is no darkness in Him (1 John 1:5). James 1:17 tells us that “every good and perfect gift” comes from God and “He withholds no good thing from those who walk uprightly with Him (Psalm 84:11).

God’s will for every Believer is acceptable. His will is pleasing because it is approved by Him and is fully pleasing to Him; those who obey His will are acceptable to Him. Believers who serve Him in love and righteousness are acceptable to Him.

God’s will for every believer is perfect. God’s perfect will has no shortcomings and will reach the goal and purpose God intended it to meet. God’s perfect will lead to spiritual maturity and will equip the Believer to do the good work God has intended (2 Timothy 3:17).
Romans 12:2 is a reminder for every Believer to not just go along with the world’s temptations, but to actively seek transformation through the renewal of your mind.

LEARNING DAILY

John 5:3, 5, Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. (v.5) One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.

Pastor Jonathon Moore spoke at NorthRock Church about a man Jesus healed at the Pool of Bethesda. He said, “One encounter with Jesus changes everything. Believe that. Receive that.” He continued, “There are times we know what to do and for some reason we do not do it.” Paul said in Romans 7:19, “I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway.” (New Living Translation). How many of you reading this can relate and say this is true of you? “The man Jesus was talking to had a physical need; the situation shows one’s spiritual need as well” (JM).

Pastor’s first point was when the pool moved you move – it was a rule. Verse 4, “For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had.” This verse was added to the Bible for clarification about this situation. It was probably a superstition, but it helps us understand that too many people are living under rules that God did not give, believing things that God never said. Jesus looked at the man and asked him if he wanted to get well. “Before He could deal with the physical problem He needed to deal with the man’s belief system. He had been there for “thirty-eight years”. He was comfortable – the discomfort in his past had conditioned him to not try something new” (JM).

2 Corinthians 10:4, “For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.” “Strongholds are arguments or experiences that argue against the knowledge of God, causing us to live by lies that become rules by which we live. That does not mean those feelings are right. The enemy wants you to take yesterday’s pain into today’s life. He wants you to see life from your stronghold, not from the way things are. Just because you feel stuck where you are does not mean you have to stay there” (JM).

Pastor said the first thing an individual who feels stuck in their situation needs to do is “get honest with yourself.” What is causing you to be stuck in the situation you are in is to expose what is limiting you. This man was comfortable. Jesus told him he needed no one to put him in the pool, he needed Him. When you become honest with yourself, you cannot blame anyone or anything for what you have accepted in your life. That is good teaching.

What did the man have to do. Jesus told him to “get up take your mat and walk.” Pastor said, “Start walking! God requires you to get on the playing field.” The man had to get up and as he began to do so, his healing came. You and I need to participate in what God wants to do in our situations. Do not allow rules to control those things you face.

LEARNING DAILY

1 Peter 3:1-2, Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct.

The message at CBC this weekend was not about wives and husbands, specifically. It was about what the Believer should do when he has spoken to others about Jesus and those he has spoken to do not want to hear it any longer. “When you gave your life to Jesus, not everyone in your family or circle of friends may have celebrated over your decision. But Heaven roared!” (Pastor Ed Newton). He continued by asking, “What do you do when those in your family, those you love, or those who were your friends do not want to hear your message about Jesus and how He saved/changed you anymore? You love them. You win them to Christ “without a word by your conduct.” Trust that God is working in them.”

It does not feel good when you are rejected. But read what Jesus said about your testimony being rejected. John 15:18-19, “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.” The world did not recognize the Messiah being looked for; they hated Jesus and sought to kill Him. Believer, because you have decided to believe in Jesus Christ and live according to His word, by walking the narrow way, the world is going to hate you. Do not be surprised if those in your family choose to put up with you or just no longer accept you. Jesus warned of this in Matthew 10:34-36). Jesus does not want there to be animosity in your family. It comes because of you doing all you can to build a relationship with Jesus. Your values changes. Your life and lifestyle begin to change as you learn more about what Jesus expects from you.

Colossians 3:3, “For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” “You do not leave those you love because they do not want to listen to you. You love them and let them observe who you are as a Believer. You live as Jesus wants you to live by walking the narrow way, so when others see you, they see the light of Jesus living in you (Matthew 5:16) (EN). You are ready to explain “the hope that is in you with gentleness and respect” (1 Peter 3:15-16). You respond with the fruit of the Spirit, love, joy, peace…. You stay firm in your conviction to walk with Jesus, even when others try to get you to be the old you, to do those things you used to do.

Believer, live out your life in Jesus Christ. “They will not see that light in you with a one-hour per week church service; it takes being with Jesus every day. Walking with Him is about a relationship. People want to see how you handle life when it ‘shakes you up.’ They want to see what you do when you come against tough situations and circumstances. You do not need to know everything, know all the correct theology. People want to see your humility to the tough, the difficult times, when you make mistakes. Your walk just needs to be consistent” (EN).
