Isaiah 7:14, “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign:
Behold the virgin shall
conceive and bear a Son and shall
call His name Immanuel.”
(The third post in a series showing prophecies about the birth of
the Lord Jesus Christ.)
There is interesting background to this prophecy. Israel and Syria had gone to Jerusalem to force
King Ahaz to join their forces against the Assyrians. The prophet told King Ahaz (remember Ahaz was
one of the most wicked kings who reigned in Judah) to trust God for
deliverance; Isaiah told him to ask God for a sign of His presence. King Ahaz would not do this because of his
evil heart. But God, gave him assign
anyway – a sign for the entire house of David.
He told of the birth of Immanuel, “God with us”.
Could this prophecy be the greatest of all prophecies? The foretelling of a virgin (the Hebrew almah
means a young woman who would be a virgin up to the time of marriage)
conceiving and giving birth to a Son. How could this be?
Emmanuel, “God with us”. The historical sign, for those
faithful to God during the time of Ahaz, was not need to fear their present
situation because Immanuel was their confidence. The greater aspect of this prophecy was
realized by the birth of Jesus Christ to the virgin Mary about 750 years later.
Luke 1:30-33 is the fulfillment of this prophecy. “Then the angel said to her, ‘Do not be
afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive
in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son
of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David’”.
