learning DAILY

1 Timothy 4:7,8, “But reject profane and old wives fables, and exercise yourself
toward godliness.  For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable
for all things, having a promise of the life that now is and of that to come.”

I just got home from the gym where I went through a great workout!  Ah, exercise….  I amazed how difficult it is the older I get.  While on the treadmill, I watch both men and women (of all ages, by the way) pumping weight, working the abdomen, stretching, and other things I am not sure of.  I believe it is a good thing to make sure the body is being taken care.

I can’t help but wonder if the same amount of time is being taken to exercise the spiritual aspect of life.  Another word for exercise here is discipline.  Timothy is saying that one is to discipline himself toward godliness.  Disciplining one’s self to go to the gym to work out is a good thing. But, exercising spiritual disciplines (Bible study, prayer, meditating on God’s
Word, etc.) is profitable for all areas of our life now and eternally.  Shouldn’t the spiritual disciplines be more important than bodily exercise?

Go to the gym, walk or run, do everything to make your body stronger, faster, and healthy for a long life. But don’t forget the spiritual disciplines that will draw you closer to the Creator of all things.
