learning DAILY

Luke 1:26-28,  Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God
to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to
 a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David.  The
virgin’s name was Mary.  And having come in, the angel said
 to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you;
blessed are you among women!”

Imagine the predicament Mary found herself in.  She is betrothed to Joseph – under a contract to be married to him.  She is not yet married but finds herself pregnant.  Mary is a virtuous woman that should be married before becoming pregnant; the marriage would justify her pregnancy in the eyes of the world.  If you were Mary, how would you explain this?  She knew the conception was of divine origin, but how could she prove it?

Notice the greeting from the angel Gabriel.  “Rejoice highly favored one, the Lord is with you.” Mary needs to be highly respected for being the one to give birth to the Messiah, the One to redeem the world.  The One she gives birth to needs to be worshiped.  Mary had found favor with God because of the life she had lived pleased Him.  She was “blessed among women not necessarily because of her unprecedented role in the history of the world.
