Proverbs 2: 10-12, “When wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge
is pleasant to your soul, discretion will preserve you;
understanding will keep you, to deliver you from the
way of evil, from the man who speaks perverse things.”
“The key word in Proverbs is wisdom, “ability to live life skillfully.” A godly life in an ungodly world, however is no simple assessment.” That quote is from the introduction to the book of Proverbs in the New King James Version Bible. In Proverbs, Solomon tells us God’s perspective on facing issues in our life.
Wisdom is mentioned 227 times in 221 verses of the Bible. Wisdom defined is: the soundness of an action or decision with regard to the application of experience, knowledge, and good judgment. Knowledge is important to have. But knowing how to apply that knowledge is better. Too many seek the knowledge without seeking how to apply it. Read what Jesus said in John 5:39-40, “You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is these that bear witness of Me; and you are unwilling to come to Me, that you may have life.” The religious leaders were searching Scriptures for knowledge but did not apply them to Jesus as the Messiah. The used them for their own benefit. There are those today who do the same thing.
Believers are to study God’s Word, Learning Daily. By doing so knowledge is gained. But, at the same time application to your own life should be done by meditating on the Word and by prayer. When doing so we have the right view of the issues we face; we can have clear, righteous thoughts about these issues. The Bible helps us form the thoughts that guide us to speak and act wisely and help others do the same.
Godly wisdom helps Believers to know the difference between what is true and what is false. To know the difference between real (true) and counterfeit bills government agents study what is true in order to know the counterfeit when they see it. So, it is with studying the Bible. Wisdom tells students of God’s Word when they encounter that which is false. Gaining God’s wisdom is so important today to help Believers keep from being deceived by what is false.
How do you gain wisdom? Be in God’s Word! Be in it daily! Learn daily! I also suggest you do what James 1:5-7 say to do. “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man expect that he will receive anything from the Lord.”
Study, seeking knowledge and the wisdom to use that knowledge. Seek wisdom, asking the Lord to give you it to you in order to use it for His honor, to further His kingdom. Ask without doubting; He wants you to have wisdom. I believe wisdom is so necessary in the days we live in and the days ahead. It will keep you from evil and those people who speak perverse things.
