Hebrews 11:5, By
faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, “and was not found,
because God had taken him”: for before he was taken he had this testimony, that
he pleased God.
Genesis 5:23-24
tells us that Enoch walked with God for 365 years. Then “he was not, for God took him”. He was the father of Methuselah and the
grandfather of Noah. That’s about all we
know about Enoch. But Hebrews 11:5
speaks volumes about the who he was. He
became a Hall of Faith member because he walked with God. If he had had a tombstone that would be
written on it. Enoch – he walked with
God. What a testimony; it should be the
desire of every Christian to have that spoken of him or her! “Enoch was an ordinary man who did one
extraordinary thing – he walked with God” (DJSB).
Think back to the
time that Enoch lived. It was during the
lifetime of his grandson, Noah, that God had said He wished He had never made
men on the earth. This did not happen
over a short period of time. It was
during this time that Enoch lived and warned the people about ungodliness. In Jude 14-15, Enoch warned of the Lord
coming with ten thousand of His saints to execute judgment on the ungodly
because of their ungodly deeds. He was a
preacher of righteousness. He denounced
sin and the unrighteousness of the time he lived in. He not only preached against the lifestyles
of people, he lived what he preached.
What does it mean to walk with God? You and I ought to get this figured out and
allow Enoch’s life be a pattern for us to live by. Enoch had no Bible to study; he had to spend
time (a lot of time) with God in order to live by faith and to trust Him in all
things. It is necessary to have you read
Hebrews 11:6, “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who
comes to God must believe that He is, and is a rewarder of those who diligently
seek Him.” This verse describes the
convictions that are a part of saving faith.
“We must believe in a personal, infinite, holy God who cares for us and
that He rewards those who diligently seek Him” (LSSB). I believe that is what Enoch did; he
pleased God. He pleased God through his
life and godliness and God honored him by taking him from this earth to live
with Him in heaven for eternity.
You and I live in
a world consumed with ungodliness and unrighteousness. This is the “way that is broad and leads
to destruction.” Jesus said there are many on it. The question each of us must answer is which
road are we on. I believe it is biblical
to examine our life each day to be sure we are walking on the narrow way that
leads to God’s kingdom and eternal life with God. If not, repent of your wrong doing and be
forgiven by the grace God gives to those who do. The day is coming when God is going to remove
those of us who are doing everything they can to walk on the narrow way – just like
Enoch. Like Enoch, we are to walk in
holiness, denounce sin, and warn people of the wrath to come. Are you diligently seeking God? Our hope is
in doing so!
