LEARNING DAILY

Psalm 11:1-4, I trust in the Lord for protection.  So why do you say to me “Fly to the mountains for safety!  The wicked are stringing their bows and setting their arrows in bowstrings.  They shoot from the shadows at those who do right.  The foundations of law and order have collapsed.  What can the righteous do?”  But the Lord is in His holy Temple; the Lord still rules from heaven.  He watches everything closely, examining everyone on earth.

“Even though there is no sure way of knowing, this Psalm was probably written when Saul was constantly threatening David with death.” (JSESB).  David found his help in the Lord when his life was in danger despite the constant urging from his counselors to “fly to the mountains” or to run and hide.  David believed he was much more secure in the Lord than hiding.

These verses of Scripture are quite relevant to what we are facing in this crazy mixed-up world that calls “evil good and good evil”.  What used to be hidden and considered shameful is now on full display and modesty is laughed at.  Living the life that the Lord wants us to live on the narrow way is mocked and many around the world are being killed for their walk with the Lord.

It seems that every moral, spiritual, and governmental foundation is being shaken, being destroyed.  What do we do?  This Psalm seems to be telling us not to panic.  Don’t run and hide; place your faith in God.  Is this not what those in the Hall of Fame of Faith did?  We read that each of them believed God when “the wicked are stringing their bows and setting their arrows in bowstrings”.

It is evident to me that the things we have trusted for so long are crumbling.  Look what has happened in this country in the last eight months – inflation is rising at a rapid pace, prices are going up at the gas pumps, in the grocery stores, moral standards are being challenged even more than in the past, war and rumors of war!  What do we do?  We place our faith and our trust in Lord until He returns for us.  If we don’t, everyday will be filled with anxiety, fear, and panic.

Read the rest of the Psalm.  “The Lord is in His holy temple; the Lord still rules from heaven.  He watches everything closely, examining everyone on earth.”  What an encouragement!  God sees what is going on in the world.  He will test the righteous (that’s you and me) and He will deal with the wicked in a severe way. It is so much better for us to trust in the One who is in control of the politics of the world, the weather, and every plague that comes.

As Christians we are not immune from every day events.  The rain falls on both the righteous and the unrighteous.  But Christians place their faith in the One who is in control of all things.  As every generation of Christians have looked for the Lord’s return, we do as well.  We live our lives in anticipation of the return of Jesus; we do not know when that will be – next week, next year or when.  We do know that we are a lot closer than it has ever been.  Maybe He will return today!  Today is certainly the day to put out faith and trust in Him!

From now on DJSB will be used to note information or quotes from the David Jeremiah Study Bible and LSSB will refer to information and quotes from the Life in the Spirit Study Bible.  I have added Jimmy Swaggart’s Expositor’s Study Bible to be referred to from now on as JSESB
