2 Corinthians 5:7, For we walk by faith not by sight

This is a really short verse that teaches us to live by faith. Hebrews 11:1 tells us that faith is, “the confident assurance that what we hope for is going to happen. It is the evidence of things we cannot yet see” (New Living Translation).  The LSSB says this about Hebrews 11:1, “Faith is trust in God in all circumstances, which enables the believer to persevere and remain steadfastly loyal to God and His Word.” The world we live in challenges, and even scoffs at, the idea that God exists and cares about you and me (That’s a lead into the next page of the blog). Unbelievers laugh at the idea that Believers live their lives to please Him by being obedient to His Word and look forward to eternity in His kingdom. Unbelievers live their lives by believing what they want to believe, seeking to please themselves, and by indulging in whatever pleases their flesh. Their walk is by sight, as well as other senses.

Let me tell you another Cherokee legend; it is a legend of the Cherokee Indian youth’s right of passage. The father takes his son into the forest, blindfolds him and leaves him alone. He is required to sit on a stump the whole night and not remove the blindfold until the rays of the morning sun shine through it. He cannot cry out for help to anyone. Once he survives the night, he is a MAN. He cannot tell the other boys of this experience, because each boy must come into manhood on his own. The boy is naturally terrified. He can hear all kinds of noises. Wild beasts must surely be all around him. Maybe even some humans might do him harm. The wind blew the grass and earth, and shook his stump, but he sat there stoically, never removing the blindfold. It would be the only way he could become a man! Finally, after a horrific night the sun appeared and he removed the blindfold. It was then that he discovered his father sitting on the stump next to him. He had been at watch the entire night, protecting his son from harm. We, too, are never alone. Even when we don’t know it, God is watching over us, sitting on the stump next to us.

God is always with us – in good times and in bad! All we need to do is reach out to Him. His promise to us is to walk with us through every circumstance and situation we face. The Cherokee legend teaches us an important lesson. Just because you don’t see God, that does not mean He is not there. In Psalm 139:7, The Psalmist asks, “Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?” As a child of God, you and I can never move out of sight of God’s care, guidance and His love. He is with us through every situation we face today and tomorrow. It is important to understand that means “we have immediate access to Him wherever we go” (DJSB).

I find this to be so important because I can live my life with the assurance that my Father in heaven sees and knows what I am going through. He gives my strength and endurance to walk by faith; I do not need to see nor understand; I walk with the assurance God is in control!
