1 John 2:15-17, Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life – is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

 

The Greek word for “the world” is kosmos. It refers to the enormous system of this age that Satan promotes and that exists independent of God. Within the kosmos is the obvious – evil, immoral and sinful lifestyles and values people have. But it also can refer to the spirit of rebellion and indifference against God and everything against the lordship of Jesus Christ. “In this age, Satan uses the world’s ideas, morality, philosophies, psychology, desires, governments, culture, education, science, art, medicine, music, economic systems, entertainment, fashions, mass media, religion, sports, agriculture, etc., to oppose God, His people, His Word, and His righteous standards” (LSSB).  That quote covers most, if not all, aspects of life. Take a moment to think through that quote and understand how Satan attempts to work in all these areas. Deception and counterfeit actions are things we must be aware of; that is why I continue to encourage you and me to be in God’s Word and to be aware of what is going on around us.

 

Do you need some examples? What does Satan use to promote the killing of unborn babies? Medicine. What is Satan using to deceive and promote ungodly and humanistic philosophies? I am so sorry to say it is our educational system. Satan is using the fashion industry to breakdown modesty and the entertainment industry and media to undermine Biblical moral standards and values. It is getting worse each year. You and I as Believers need to understand that behind all human enterprises there is a spirit that is against God and His Word. That same spirit is behind all man-made religious systems and all unbiblical, worldly “Christian” organizations and churches.

 

It has always been Satan’s desire to be worshipped. He desired to be worshipped above God and was cast out of heaven because of it. After Jesus was baptized, He was led by the Spirit into the wilderness where He was tempted by Satan. In Matthew 4:8-10, Satan told Jesus he would give Him the kingdoms of the world – if He would fall down and worship him. Jesus would not do so. Satan is the god of this present world system. He has a following of angels cast out of heaven with him who help him challenge all people in this world, including Christians.

 

Why deal with this? I am not glorifying Satan at all. The world system and true Christians are two very distinct groups. The world is under the dominion or control of Satan; the true church belongs exclusively to God. You and I, the true Church must separate ourselves from the world. We must walk on the narrow way and not walk near the edge or with one foot on the narrow way and the other outside of it. Loving the world system prevents fellowship with God and may even be a sign that one has never really experienced the love of the Father and the saving grace of the Son.
