LEARNING DAILY

1 Peter 5:6-7, Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

I have written before about a former Head of Schools who used a car as a tool to ask the question, “Who is driving your car [life]?”. I always thought it to be a great question to ask myself continually. I have included a picture today about that cat who is continually used to teach me something I need to be taught. Evidently, I needed some help getting to our destination as he decided to help drive the car.

Here is my thought for today: Once a person comes to the place where he/she knows the need for Jesus Christ to forgive their sin and asks Him into their lives, what happens next? The answer lies in knowing you have to let go of your life and doing what you want and allowing Jesus Christ to have His way in your life. Are you driving or is Jesus Christ the driving force in your life. He gave us the example to follow while He was walking on earth as He often stated He did nothing on His own. He said He had come to do the will of His Father. And He said, “Not as I will, but as You will”. Have you allowed God’s will to be your guide, following His commandments as best you can?

For one to surrender their will to Jesus, he/she needs to believe that He knows what is best and will lead them in that direction. If one believes that He is the sustaining force in their life, there will be no limitations on Him being the Lord of their life. In other words, if He is truly the Lord in your life, there are no conditions for us to meet for Him to guide us into all Truth.

One way we get to this point is found in Psalm 46:10, “Be still [cease striving], and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted on the earth!”  Not one of us can do anything to earn more of God; stop striving and know that when He becomes our Savior, we make Him our Lord by doing what He says. “He has committed Himself to be the believer’s faithful and constant guide throughout life, in the experience of death and beyond death to the eternal home where we will be with Him forever” (LSSB). Our personal circumstances are never too much for His power and faithfulness.

What are you holding on to that makes you feel secure and even powerful in your life? Is it keeping you from surrendering yourself totally to Him? If there is, this is a good time to pause and pray that He would help you to surrender it to Him and that He take the place of whatever you are not trusting Him with. I want to tell you that doing so will help you as you walk the narrow way!

Here is what happens when we surrender control of our lives. Do you remember what Moses told the Hebrews when they were between the Red Sea and Pharoah’s army? He told them to stand and see the power and glory of the Lord! God was in control – the entire time – and He worked for them. When we surrender, we are telling the Lord that we trust Him to work for us. For most people trusting Him is a life-long process. It is a choice each of us makes each day. For me, it means I do not have to understand the “whys” of the situations I face; it means I place my faith in the One who knows all things. Yes, He even knows tomorrow and the next day and next week! I was encouraged years ago, to write down things I was thankful for each day. Perhaps doing so would encourage you to see God’s faithfulness in your life. It only encourages us to trust Him more for today.

We need to be diligent about seeking Him. Jeremiah 29:13 gives me assurance that God will be faithful to lead us when we do. “And you will seek me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.” Diligently seeking Him will result in finding Him in everything we do. That is His promise.

So, who is driving your life?
