LEARNING DAILY
Psalm 90:12, So
teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
I read a devotion
a while back that asked this question: “Are you getting everything you want
from life?” It is a question that made me take some time to consider and
seriously reflect on my life. Time has passed quickly; it seems like yesterday
that various events took place and I realize that was 55 years ago or 50 years
ago and 20 something years ago. The verse from Psalms is a verse that helps me
understand that this life on earth is short and goes by quickly. Because of
that each of us needs to take inventory about how we spend each day.
The Bible is
clear about both this life being brief. We focus on today, walking on the
narrow way to eternity in God’s kingdom praying the Holy Spirit guides us, in “a
heart of wisdom” to live each day as He desires and for His glory. “The
life we are living now should be preparation for the next life, and we should
determine what God wants us to accomplish for Himself, our families and others
through our faithful service” (LSSB). The wisdom we need to live this way comes
from Him; our human knowledge can get us into trouble so quickly. So, we ask. James writes to ask God when we
lack wisdom. But we ask in faith and without doubting that God will give
liberally the wisdom we need! Liberally means “stretching out”. The notes in
the DJSB give a “picture of a beautiful banquet table arranged with all the delicious
morsels of wisdom that God has made available to Believers.” Think of how
generous God is to us!
Oh, how I would
like to have back some things said or did in the past. But yesterday is gone –
completely and forever. We cannot get it back! What about tomorrow? Tomorrow is
not promised for any of us! We need to make today count. We live this life one
day at a time and make the most of it for the glory of God.
The Bible also
speaks of living in eternity. When our time on this earth is finished, two
things will be considered. Most importantly where each of us will spend
eternity will be based on whether we accepted or rejected salvation through
Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and His resurrection. No one gets on the
narrow way without accepting Jesus as their Savior and then walking with Him. When
we walk into heaven, how we lived in dedication to Him will be evaluated. I
Corinthians 3 discusses rewards given to us based on our obedience and service.
The days certainly
slip by quickly; do not allow them to slip by too quickly that we fail to do
the things God desires us to do to walk with Him. “The next time you look at a
clock and wonder where the day has gone, remember that you are one day closer
to eternity” (quote from the devotional).
From now on DJSB
will be used to note information or quotes from the David Jeremiah Study Bible
and LSSB will refer to information and quotes from the Life in the Spirit Study
Bible.
