LEARNING DAILY

James 3:17-18, But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

The wisdom from above allows Believers to apply God’s Word to the earthly challenges faced each day. Proverbs 2:8, “For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity; guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints.” He gives His wisdom to anyone who asks for it; that is the only requirement – ask! It is important to go back to what James wrote in 1:6, “But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.” This is not asking for more money, power, or pleasure. It is asking for more opportunities to serve others.

When Believers ask for God’s wisdom, James writes it is “first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.” Do you understand that this is a supernatural gift that God gives and aligns with God’s nature and character. God’s wisdom places high value on conflict being resolved. It focuses on being considerate and peace with others rather than the desire to fight; it is always ready to serve, instead. It is always ready to see another point of view and try another way. God’s wisdom is full of mercy and forgiveness. Jesus told His followers they would be known “by their fruits” (Matthew 7:20). The wisdom does not show favoritism and does not try to get something from others in return.

What James writes reminds us of what Paul wrote in Galatians 5:22-23, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” Do you see the difference from earthly wisdom which results in envy, selfish ambition, and division? It is amazing how much easier and more peaceful life becomes when one (especially a Believer) gives up having to have their own way or getting what he wants at the cost of others. The wisdom from above can change your life. The choice is each Believers to make.

James concludes his thoughts with an interesting picture, “And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.” Matthew 5:9 talks about peacemakers, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” Peacemakers actively pursue peace and settlement of difficult situations. The crop of this field to be harvested is righteousness, goodness, and everything those who walk with God want to see in this world. Do you see who sows the seed? It is done “by those who make peace.” It is done by those who are fully committed to making peace, by those who know God is providing for them. They do not need to fight others for what they need and that leads to righteous choices.

That is the result of the wisdom from above. God knows Believers need His wisdom today!
