2 Timothy 3:2- 4, For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,
Perilous times Paul said. Then, he gave this lengthy list of sins that have their root in self-centered love. This self-love is destructive because people are attempting to fulfill or gratify their own desires and lusts rather than please God. Take time to reread the verses above. Is there anything listed that pleases God? Absolutely nothing in this list brings honor or glory to Him!
When one loves money, he tries to get all he can and keep all he gets (Kind of life hoarding paper and groceries). Has God and His name been blasphemed (cursed)? Take a moment to reflect on the successful attempts to remove Him form every aspect of society since the 1960s. The fear of God has long been gone in people’s lives, in their speech. Matthew Henry’s Commentary states, “When men do not fear God they will not regard man, and so vice versa.” Listen to the news. Listen to what politicians, news reporters, people in general say about one another; there is certainly no respect shown.
I ask you to look what is happening to the family today. Satan hates the family because it is God’s structure – he will do anything to destroy it. Paul prophetically says children will be disobedient to parents and their will be no feelings of the natural feelings of love and tenderness normally associated with a family unit. Think about the family structure today. Mothers abandon or kill their babies, fathers leave the family, children neglect the care of aging parents. Loving parents have been replaced by selfish, brutal parents who abandon their children.
Self-control or the ability to govern ourselves to live the right way is going to become an issue. When the ability to control ourselves and our desires is lost, the ability to rule our heart is lost. Turmoil and chaos will result. People will become brutal, despisers of good, and turn against one another. People will love pleasure more than they love God. Then the times will be perilous, indeed.
Are we there? You read the verses. You take the time to discern the times we live in. Just look around and listen. What do you think? This is tough stuff to consider – not the goose- pimples and fun things we like to read or hear. I suggest each of us refuse to allow ungodly influences to direct our lives and live according to God’s plans in the best way we know how. It is time we begin to pray one for another and encourage one another in these times.
