Revelation 22:8-10, Now I, John, saw and heard these things. And when I heard and saw, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel who showed me these things. Then he said to me, “See that you do not do that. For I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren the prophets, and of those who keep the words of this book. Worship God.” And he said to me, “Do not seal the words of the prophecy of this book for the time is at hand.”
What would you do if an angel showed up at your house today and revealed the things of heaven to you? John fell at the feet of the angel to worship him several times in this vision. Each time he was told to get up because he (the angel) was not to be worshipped. Let’s be fair to John; He had just heard the Lord speak that the thing he had seen and words he had written were true and those who keep these words would be blessed. John’s immediate response was to worship. Did John confuse the angel for the One who spoke the message?
Do you enjoy worship? Too often worship is considered the time singing is done. How many times have you heard at church something said after the singing about worship being done and the sermon begins? Worship is continued when the Word of God is opened and proclaimed! One of the many take-a-ways in The Revelation is that worship is continually being given to God in heaven for eternity. One of the popular Christian songs today has been “I Can only Imagine”.
It considers what one will do the first time he encounters Jesus in heaven. Hmmmm. I can’t imagine anyone not falling down and giving Him worship and adoration. I have been forgiven much! What about you? I suggest giving the Lord worship now – just to get used to it.
Take a moment to reread verse 10. John was told to keep this book of prophecy open; it was not to be sealed. It was to be read because “the time was at hand”. There was urgency for it to be read. The prophet Daniel was also given this prophecy but was told to seal what he was given (Daniel 12:4) because it was for the distant future. The prophecy being given John by Jesus Christ (Revelation 1:1) is the full and final plan for the end of history and the beginning of eternity.
Understand that God’s desire is for all to read this prophecy, to scrutinize it. He is openly showing all who read it what is going to happen; there are no secrets! It is a call to pay attention and serve the Lord now until He returns. The word quickly is used here and refers to the action of Christ. When He comes for his Church, He will come with unbelievable speed.
He alone is in control of history (His-story!)! He controls all eternity! He deserves all the worship that you and I can give to Him. We worship Him with our mouth, with our service. Romans 12:1-2, I beseech you therefore, brethren by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
