learning DAILY

Isaiah 5:20, Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter.

Romans 6:16-18, Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slave whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?  But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered.  And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.

Would you disagree with me when I write that the country we live in, the world we live in is a mess and has called evil good and good evil for a long time.  As I sit here this morning thinking about my life time, I do not remember a time when evil was called evil and good called good.  I remember living in kinder times than now but now know from reading history evil was being called good – it was just not done as openly as now.

Today society exalts sin as some manly thing and calling immorality and perversion a commendable freedom.  On the other hand, righteousness is called evil and must be done away with.  Sexual perversion is called an alternative lifestyle that should be accepted while those who believe biblical standards of sexual morality are called bigots who promote oppressive prejudices.  Pro-abortion advocates are called sensitive persons who are deeply committed to the rights of women while pro-life advocates are called extremists or religious kooks. The country has gone crazy with rioting and looting done in what used to be called protests.  Don’t you dare disagree with those calling evil good and good evil because you have a good chance at being shot; it is your right to speak your belief as long as your belief is what those promoting evil believe.   Do you get the picture?

There seems to be another belief being promoted through all of this – Jesus came to set us free from the “guilt of sin”.  No, He came to deliver us from sin.  There must come a time when one has to stop using the cover of Christianity to sin.  When one accepts – really accepts - Christ as Savior, he or she is not given a license to sin without feeling guilty about it.  If you sin, you are guilty of sin and become a slave to it.  Using the cover of salvation is wrong.  To be a true Christian, a true follower of Jesus Christ, is to be obedient to the way He says you must live.  It means calling evil evil and good good!  Obedience to biblical teachings leads to life and righteousness.  Being disobedience leads to death.

Randy Alcorn said this, “Any concept of grace that makes us feel more comfortable sinning is not biblical grace.  God’s grace never encourages us to live in sin; on the contrary, it empowers us to say no to sin and yes to truth.”  Jesus came to destroy sin not make us feel okay when we sin.  When the woman caught in adultery was brought to Him, He told her to go and sin no more.  He did not tell her to go and feel okay about her life style.

So, today recognize and confess sin in your own life!  Call it what it is; call evil evil and good good! That is true Christianity, true grace.  It is what Paul called a “slave to righteousness”.  Taking a stand will not be popular and may be difficult.  But Christians were called to be different.
