Learning DAILY

John 9:25, He answered and said, “Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know.  One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see.”

We have been looking at why God’s people are afflicted.  Today, I would like to examine a different situation that Jesus used to teach His disciples an important lesson.  When passing by a “man blind from birth” (v. 1), the disciples wanted to know if his parents had sinned causing the blindness.  The disciples believed that every serious affliction was the result of some sin.  That could be seen as a logical thought because there are sicknesses that result from sin; but that is not always the case.  In the case of the blind man, Jesus saw a man in need and an opportunity to display God’s love, mercy, and power.  Jesus could have just healed the man; instead he put a dirt and saliva mixture on the man’s eyes and told him to go wash in the pool of Siloam.

It was the Sabbath and to do such an event was declared to be unlawful by the Jewish leaders.  In their crazy thinking, the healing of this man was work and a violation of Jewish law.  Jesus must be found and punished.  For the Jewish leaders there was no celebration of this man’s good fortune only opportunity to condemn Jesus.

The man’s parents and the man himself were questioned about what had happened.  How could they explain something they did not understand?  The debate around this healing centered on the Pharisees stating Jesus was a sinner because He did not keep the Sabbath.  It seems to me that arguments get made up when facts are not there to support an argument.

The man’s statement regarding this is simple but pretty profound to me.  “Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know.  One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see.”   He simply stated what he knew.  He was blind.  Then he met Jesus and could see.  His life changed!  It is pretty difficult to argue with that.  This man had no idea if Jesus was a sinner or not; I doubt it mattered to him.  But he sure knew he could see after meeting Him!

I have heard people say too often that they do not have a testimony.  They did not do drugs.  They had no addiction to alcohol or anything else.  To me, everyone has a testimony.  I met Jesus and He changed my life!  How can anyone argue with that?  The difference of who you were and who you are now needs to be shared.  How has your life changed since meeting Jesus?  There does not need to be a great and deep theological oration about Christianity.  Others want to know the change; the change should be seen in the way you live your life.  I do not know how many times I have heard and said that your life may be the only Bible someone reads.

How has your life changed since meeting the One who changed your situation?  Can you say that once you were blind (to whom He is) but now you see?
