Learning DAILY

Jeremiah 32:17, Ah, Lord God!  Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm.

The background to this statement by the prophet comes when the Lord told Jeremiah to buy or redeem family land belonging to his uncle.  This was to confirm that the Lord would bring His people back to the Promised Land when the exile was over.  This did not make a lot of sense because of the imminent Babylonian conquest of the land.  So, Jeremiah prayed, asking for understanding.  He gained strength by remembering that “there is nothing too hard for You”.

That God is able to do anything should give us all hope and encouragement.  It should strengthen our resolve to keep moving forward during the times we do not understand or when trials are seemingly overwhelming.  I believe God can do anything and everything!  Here is my question.  If God can do anything, is there anything He won’t do?  The answer is yes!  Now some may say He can’t do things while others may say He won’t do them.  Let’s agree that God’s character is not capable of evil.

To begin, I made a list of what I knew the Bible said God cannot do.  Then, I consulted the internet to see if I had missed anything.  What I found was a lot of lists people had made about this subject.  Imagine my surprise that I did not have a complete list already on the subject!  So, let me share a few things this morning and you can add to it.

God cannot lie.  Hebrews 6:18, “that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible lie,…”  God’s trustworthiness applies to His entire Word.  Its very words are truth.  The very words were “written by authors that were guided by the Holy Spirit to write the original manuscript in such a way that they were God’s message to humanity without error” (The Life in the Spirit Study Bible).  Because of this, the Bible presents a set of absolutes for Believers to follow!

God cannot change.  Malachi 3:6, “For I am the Lord, I do not change;” God is immutable!  There is no reason for God to change; He is complete in Himself!  His promises in His Word will not change.  What He has promised cannot be changed!  It is a great comfort to know that because I am saved, He will not take my eternal destiny away just because He changes His mind.  If He did, He could not be trusted.  This also means that the prophetic word in the Bible will be fulfilled.  What He has set in motion will not be stopped.

God cannot stop loving you.  Jeremiah 31:3, The Lord appeared of old to me, saying, “Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you”. Through the prophet, the Lord is telling Israel that “restoration would follow the judgment of exile because He loved them with an everlasting love and He would never withdraw His lovingkindness from them” (David Jeremiah).  Lovingkindness means a “loyal love”; it is the kind of love that God loves each of those who have placed their faith in Him.  It never ends (Malachi 1:2).  Nothing can separate us from this love (Romans 8:39).

God cannot stand sin. Isaiah 59:2, But your iniquities have separated you from God; and your sins have hidden His face from you.  Wickedness and sin in our lives is like putting up a fence between us and God.  Because of this we cannot experience the blessings of salvation, such as God’s favor and protection.  Each individual must decide to accept the gift of eternal life through the salvation Jesus Christ offers through His death on the cross.  Once this is done, each Believer must still ask for forgiveness when they sin.  You are going to sin!  When you do, you must ask for forgiveness and believe 1 John 1:9 (look it up!).  God will not and cannot tolerate sin.

There are certainly other things God cannot or will not do.  Make your own list.  It is good to remember God forgives us, His mercy and grace is extended to us every day, and His promises are constant and true.
