LEARNING DAILY

1 Peter 2:15-17, For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men as free yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God.  Honor all people.  Love the brotherhood.  Fear God.  Honor the king.

I kept the following words on my white board when I taught government; FREEDOM IS NEVER FREE.  I think the students came into the room, read it, and maybe thought that is nice without understanding its meaning.  I have given that statement some thought as I thought about this day we remember as Veteran’s Day.  Veteran’s Day is the day we remember those men and women who died to keep this nation free and not to be confused with Memorial Day when we remember all those who serve and have served in the armed forces of this nation.  We must never forget the sacrifice of those who fought to keep the enemy from reaching the shores of our nation, who fought to keep the failed governmental and economic philosophies that have failed in other countries from being instituted in our nation.

I remember watching Nikita Krushchev, the leader of the former USSR, pounding his shoe on the United Nation’s podium yelling at the United States of America would be buried by the economic philosophy of socialism and communism.  We laughed at that.  Yet, this failed philosophy is at our doorstep, the desire of many today.  How have we gotten to the place where people are willing to give up the freedoms men and women died for?  In the place of making our own decisions about what we want to do when, where, and how, are we really willing to allow the government to make those decisions for us?  That is not freedom!

There is a freedom that no one can take from us.  Jesus Christ died on a cross to give freedom from the bondage of sin.  The only way to solve the problem of being separated from God is to accept this plan of salvation through His Son Jesus Christ.  Freedom is not free!  Our freedom could only come through the sacrifice of the Lamb of God.  I am eternally grateful for His sacrifice to give me the spiritual freedom I have.

Remember the sacrifices so many have made to keep us free from enemies outside of this nation.  As Christians, we are part of our society as servants of God.  We must remember that the Bible commands obedience to authority except when that authority demands immoral or ungodly behavior.
