LEARNING DAILY

Matthew 5:14-16, “You are the light of the world.  A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.  Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”   Jesus

All sorts of mischief and evil happen in the dark.  I suppose the thought is one cannot be seen when physical darkness occurs and getting caught will be more difficult.  To prevent an unwanted “guest” from coming into our house, we have a light on the house that comes on with movement as a deterrent.  Darkness does not like the light because it exposes the deeds done there.

In John 8:12, Jesus said He was the light of the world.  In 1 John 1:5-7, Christians are told if they walk in the light and not walk in darkness, we shall have the light of life because Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin.  “You are the light of the world.”  Consider the importance of this statement.  Lloyd-Jones gives the following for Christians to consider.  “This statement is much more than just doing ministry.  It extends beyond teaching, preaching, or passing out tracts.  The Christian is not just a reflection of light.  You are light itself!  The intensity of your light depends on the intensity of your walk with the Lord.  In other words, the world recognizes those who walk closely with the Lord.”

It is interesting to hear promises being made that will solve the problems this nation has.  They believe that applying science and knowledge will solve the difficulties this nation has.  They believe unity is a matter of an ungodly philosophy being in leadership positions.  Man might have great knowledge but they do not understand the real problems faced in this nation.  The problems we face must be faced with the light that Christian people possess through their faith in Jesus Christ.  But just as the darkness in the day of Jesus (the Light) did not comprehend the Light, neither does darkness comprehend the light of Christians today.  Just as darkness wanted to destroy the light of Jesus, it wants to destroy the light of Christians today.

You are the light of the world.”  It is interesting to me the wisdom of God is ridiculed throughout this nation.  You are the light to this dark world; this applies to all Christians not just a select group.  Jesus came to bring light with respect to life.  When we believe the gospel of Christ, we receive His light and our life must reflect that light.  It is important to understand the intimate relationship one can have with the Lord Jesus Christ.  As a Christian, you become a participant in His divine nature.  That means, the light that is Christ Himself, the light that is ultimately god, is the light that is in you!

Why did Jesus talk about being salt and light?  As salt you can affect people by living in the world; it emphasizes who you are.  There should be something different about you.  As people watch you, they should see something different about you and begin to ask questions.  It is at this time the light begins to shine as you are able to speak and teach them.  People want to see how you act before they will listen.  I am not talking about getting on the proverbial soap box and preaching on the street corner.  I am talking about you living a godly life, people seeing it, and asking what is different about you.  What changed you.  Then, you simply tell them the love of Jesus touched your life and this is how he changed you.  Salt first, then light.

It seems to me that God is about to shake this nation.  He has warned us over and over.  Like Israel, we have ignored the warnings.  I wish I could tell you what that means.  I know we are living among men and women who are in a state of gross darkness; they need to meet the Savior. They will never have any light without you and me and the gospel we believe in.  They are watching us to see what we will do with the darkness we live in.  Do they see something different in you?  Are you living in such a way that will lead them to ask you what makes you different?  The shaking is coming.  Do not fear it.  Instead live your life as the light of the world.  Do not hide it!  This dark world needs you to live and function as the light of Jesus Christ.
