LEARNING DAILY

John 18:38, Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?”

John 14:6, Jesus said to him, ”I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

Just over two thousand years ago truth was put on trial, was found guilty, and was crucified by people who were devoted to lies.  Few people at this time could answer the question about truth.  It seems that people today are still unable to answer the question and continue to distort and crucify the truth.

Two thousand years ago the Truth was brought before the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate; people told lies about Him so that He would be found guilty of crimes He did not commit.  Eventually Pilate would question the Truth for himself and ask the question that has found its way throughout history, “What is truth?”  Pilates question reflected the sarcasm of his day that the truth could not be known and was a matter of opinion.  That sarcasm has not changed, has it!?  Pilate had no idea that the answer to his question was standing right in front of him.  I suspect that reality is the same for most people today.

It seems that this question faces every individual.  Each person has to at some time in their life comes face to face with the Truth and either accept Him of reject Him.

Perhaps it would help to know what truth is not.  Truth is not what works; lies can work.  Truth is not what makes a person feel good.  Truth is not what the majority of people believe (remember the definition of a democracy is three wolves and a sheep deciding what to have for dinner!).  Truth is not defined by what we know or believe we know; a lie is still a lie!  Do you get the picture?

According to Vines Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words, the Greek word for truth in John18:38 is aletheia which means (and I am paraphrasing) nothing is hidden, truth is always out in the open for anyone to see.

Truth does not change.  For example, 2 + 2 = 4.  That will never change; it is an absolute truth.   All other answers are wrong.  Jesus said to Pilate that He was the way, the truth, and the life.  No one would come to the Father except through Him.  For the those who believe the Bible is true that is an absolute.  Christians are thought to be narrow minded because believing this to be an absolute truth means all other ways to heaven are false.

So, why is this important?  Does it matter how much medication an individual is given?  Give a person too little or too much dosage of medicine could have terrible results.  A different person might require more or less of the same medication to make that individual better. What if you go east instead of west, or get on the wrong plane because someone tells you incorrectly?  Truth matters.  Ravi Zacharias, has said, “The fact is truth matters – especially when you are on the wrong end of a lie.”

You need to know the difference between that which is true and that which is a lie!  There seems to be no more important distinction than when it comes to Jesus Christ!  Believing that He is the way, the Truth, and the life – well eternity is a long to believe in a lie!
