LEARNING DAILY

3 John 4, I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.  John

Truth is not whatever people believe it to be. Too many do whatever they want to because they believe there is no absolute truth to guide them.  Imagine jumping off a building after declaring gravity was not their truth.  Gravity is an absolute truth that exists whether a person believes it or not.

Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) was a philosopher that promoted the idea of moral relativism.  His writings had a strong influence on Adolph Hitler among others.  I saw this in a devotional a while back, “… we can sum up Nietzsche’s life in two graffiti messages found on a building. The first message: ‘God is dead. – Nietzsche.’  The second message: ‘Nietzsche is dead. – God’.”  Whatever people express as their truth, God’s truth always wins!  Jesus proclaimed absolute truth and it is learned through God’s Word.

To “walk in truth” in this verse means a continual act of doing so.  To “walk in truth” means to not only embrace but implies that it is always in the forefront of one’s mind and that one is constantly being influenced and acted on by it.  The more one practices “walking in truth” by continually professing Christ’s truth, the easier it becomes to do.

Do you hear John’s joy when he hears his that other Christians are “walking in truth”?  This is the same person who was with Jesus when He was transfigured.  He had left everything to walk with Jesus for three years and heaven opened to him in The Revelation.  With all he had experienced, he experiences as great a joy hearing and seeing others “walk in truth”.  Why?  Because to “walk in truth” is the best way to acknowledge we belong to Jesus Christ; it shows our sincerity and our faith in Him.  I believe that our sanctification (being set apart from the world) and our spiritual happiness and joy depend on the value we place on God’s standard of truth.

I have to say that I receive the greatest of joy watching my family, friends, and former students exemplify Jesus Christ as they “walk in truth”.  It proves that biblical teaching was received and that it became more than just an emotional moment; it became practical and a way of life.  It is so pleasing to me to be in worship with my family, watching them worship with the music and the message from the Word.  Let me tell you the joy I have knowing that former students are ministers for the Lord Jesus Christ, the lead pastors of their churches. I am so proud of them!

Let me close today with the closing from a devotional from James Kennedy Ministries.  “God’s absolute truth gives us joyful purpose in this relativistic age.  How wonderful to know our faith is built on truth.  I’m a Christian not because I need to be or because it feels right (although both are true).  I’m a Christian because Christ is truth.”
