LEARNING DAILY
Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden,
and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am
gentle and lowly in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Jesus
The words of Jesus are words of encouragement, perhaps a command to come
to Him. It is because of the cross
that we are able to do so. “Come”. “Come
now”! His invitation is still available to
all who “labor and are heavy laden” with the difficulties of life and the sins
of their own human nature. He is still
speaking to all who suffer with the routine, with weariness, with overwork, and
with heavy responsibilities. He is
talking about those who have had something put on them from an outside source
that causes “burnout”. By coming to
Jesus, by serving Him and being obedient to His direction and His desires, He
will free you from the heaviness you are under and give you rest, peace, and the
Holy Spirit will help you through life.
Do not misunderstand, His form of rest does not mean you stop
working. No, His form of rest rejuvenates
and brings freshness to your work.
The yoke Jesus is talking about is to come under His leadership and to
walk in His footsteps. Imagine a parent
stepping in deep snow to create a path for their child to have an easier time
getting through it. The child may still
struggle but the way becomes clearer and easier because of walking in the path
made by the parent. When a Believer
takes the yoke of Jesus, they place themselves under His care and trust Him to
lead them. There is a tremendous release
of stress and pressure in knowing that Jesus is with you in every situation every
day!
1 John 5:3, “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandment. And His commandments are not burdensome.” I add this verse because of those who believe
following the Lord, taking His yoke, is just following a lot of rules. When you and I take His yoke upon us, we find
a victory unbelievers do not understand.
By living an obedient life, we find peace. That does not mean we do not have struggles,
grief, and all the other difficulties faced in this world. It means the Holy Spirit helps us to be
obedient and watches over us so we never forget the love God has for each of
us.
It is important for us to remember when we bring our burdens to Jesus,
he does not give us a lecture on doctrines nor does He give us a set of
religious beliefs to memorize and study.
He gives us rest. Give to Him those things which burden your life today. Do it right now! Jesus is not only your Savior; He wants to be
your Lord. That means He wants you to
give Him everything you deal with today.
He really is the only One who can give you the rest you seek!
