LEARNING DAILY

Revelation 2:4, “Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love.”  Jesus

Our family got together for lunch on Easter.  Somehow, we got on the subject of what I allowed our daughters to watch on television when they were young.  I had just given my life to the Lord and was pretty strict on what my family could watch on television and what we could listen to on the radio.  I told everyone that I even burned all my records because it was the devil’s music.  I even made the statement, “You know the music of the 60s and especially the 70s, the devil’s music, you know the music I like to listen to now.”  Obviously, I got to thinking about that statement and here we are.

What were you like when you first got saved?  Perhaps you were like me.  I could not get enough of God’s Word.  I studied daily and the Holy Spirit opened it up to me in an amazing way.  I was very fundamental in my application of it.  I was in a prayer group, attended the Full Gospel Businessmen’s meetings, and had Bible studies in our home (sometimes every night of the week).  And, I brought my family along with me.  That was almost 45 years ago.

I still love God’s Word, reading and studying daily.  But I can look back and see changes have taken place.  I have gotten complacent in areas of discipline over the years.  What I would never have allowed early in my Christian walk, I have allowed.

Jesus was referring to the Ephesians’ first deep love and passion for Christ and His Word.  He is giving warning that teaches all of His followers today that knowing correct doctrine, obeying some of the commands, and worshipping in church is not enough!  The Church – all true Believers – must have above all a heartfelt love for Jesus Christ and His Word.  What follows is a single-hearted devotion to Him, living a pure life and a love of the truth.

The first love is an open devotion to Jesus Christ that certainly characterizes the new Believer.   Jesus told the church at Ephesus to repent and go back to loving Him and doing the works they did when they first believed.  I am wondering about each of us who believe.  Perhaps a time of reflection needs to be taken.  Many who read this blog have walked with the Lord for a long time.  Is your love for Him and His Word as strong as it was when you first believed?  It just seems necessary to do so because of the times we are living in.  There are still many people in your area of influence who need to see the love of Jesus in your life, to see His light shining through you.
